For the pleated front panel, use short-pile cotton velvet or a similarly soft fabric that can be pleated. For lining, use firm-weight dress cotton, quilting fabric or silk. Variations If you do not want to make the pleated panel, you could simply cut two back pieces, piece C, instead and use one for the front. Dear Clare, The main pieced section of this quilt is based on Brenda Gael Smith’s Topsy Turvy quilt featured on the cover of the June/July 2014 Quilters Companion #67. I used the pattern as a guide; I wanted to use only what I had in my stash so instead of using half a yard of eight fabrics, I used a 13in x 17in rectangle of about 16 different fabrics. I followed the stack technique described in the article to make 16 blocks, which were trimmed to 11in square (finished). The smaller rectangular pieced section was made using the add-on technique. • Pre-1900 colours were indigos, cadet blues, blacks, cinnamon pink and red with shirtings. Some greens, browns and chrome yellow. The prints were often small. Ditsy or Diaper prints. • Turn-of-the-century: the colours got paler with light multicoloured geometrics, florals and paisleys. Blacks got more complex with over prints in bright colours. • Leading into the early ‘20s, the colours started to get a little more vibrant. You start to see some wonderful conversational and novelty prints like horses’ heads and playing cards. I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun playing with a ruler! I had heard a lot about the Hex N More ruler, had seen numerous quilt designs on the internet, helped the girls purchase the rulers while on the Quilters Companion/Travelrite tour, but had not played with the ruler. I am very happy that Two Green Zebras now distributes these rulers in Australia and I finally was able to play with it, and its friend, the Sidekick Ruler. Hex N More was designed in 2012 by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts. It is a largish ruler in a jewel shape. Tools Of The Trade Sewing Machine – Any machine can be used for quiltmaking. It is helpful to have a darning foot as an attachment for the machine for free machine quilting. Iron and ironing board – Make these readily available near your sewing machine so that all seams can be pressed to assist in accurate piecing. Needles – Most quilters favour a ‘between’ needle, size 8-12 for both hand-sewing and hand-quilting. Size 12, the smallest size, is usually used by very experienced quilters. Sewing Thread – Use any cotton or cotton-covered polyester thread. For machine quilting, use cotton, cottoncovered polyester, monofilament or decorative threads.
