AIPP Announces 2019 Pro Photographer Of The Year Tasmanian photographer Matt Palmer has been judged the 2019 Australian Professional Photographer Of The Year, following the running of the annual Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs). Matt – who is based in Geilston Bay near Hobart – is a passionate environmentalist and he won with a powerful portfolio of four landscape images which depict the impact of climate change on the environment. Organised by the Australian Institute Of Professional Photography (AIPP), the APPAs are the most prestigious – and rigorous – competition for professional photographers, with submitted portfolios judged by panels of Australia’s leading photographers in each of the categories. Sony-fabricated BSI-type CMOS with an imaging area of 32.9x43.8 mm with an effective pixel count of 102 million, giving a pixel size of 3.75 microns (the BSI design helps optimise sensitivity). No optical low-pass filter to optimise resolution, and copper wiring used to reduce impedance. Conventional Bayer RGBG filter pattern. Sensitivity range is equivalent to ISO 100 to 12,800 with extensions to ISO 50 and ISO 102,400. RAW capture gives 14 stops of dynamic range. Ultrasonic vibration for self-cleaning, but more significantly, in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) is provided via sensor shifting. Sydney’s domestic airport terminal some time in 1987 and press photographer Craig Golding is waiting for a flight to Melbourne. Everyone is on the aircraft except for Craig and the pop star. Craig is hiding around the corner and the gate is now locked off. They bring the pop star out and put him in first class. Craig walks on after him and the airline staff hassle him. “What are you doing?” “Here’s my ticket, I’m on this flight.” Craig has to walk past the pop star who is sitting by a window. One of the joys of attending the annual Head On Photo Festival in Sydney is exploring the new ways that photographers are using the medium to create engaging visual narratives across the spectrum. With over 100 exhibitions under the festival umbrella, more than half of which were curated by Head On, I found the Tenth Anniversary program immensely satisfying. Exhibitions ranged from documentary images that address important social issues to fictional works that challenge stereotypical norms and intimate narratives told in abstract form. Having a number of featured shows at the Festival Hub at the Paddington Town Hall meant that visitors to this inner-Sydney suburb were able to view a considerable amount of work in one place.
