NOW THAT NIKON HAS REVEALED ITS hand with its full-35mm format mirrorless camera system, it’s hard not to think about where it could have been if it had done it all a bit earlier. Like, for example, back in January 2016 when it made a big fuss about launching the D5 pro-level D-SLR at that year’s CES in Las Vegas. As I noted at the time, this was undoubtedly a missed golden opportunity to unveil something truly new, but clearly Nikon wasn’t ready… although the Z System would have undoubtedly been in development at the time. SEE, THAT DIDN’T HURT A BIT, DID IT? NIKON proves it can build highly capable full-35mm format mirrorless cameras, and so presents Sony with its first direct competition. Nikon’s Z 6 lines up against the A7 III and the Z 7 takes on the A7R III. Here’s an overview of the shiny new Z mount system. SENSORS: Both the Z 6 and Z 7 camera bodies have backside-illuminated (BSI) type CMOS sensors with an imaging area of 23.9x35.9 mm. As with its D-SLRs, Nikon is still calling this its ‘FX’ format. The wait is over as Nikon has pulled the wraps off its all-new full-35mm format mirror-less camera system. As earlier rumours suggested, it’s based around a new lens mount called the Z mount and the first two camera bodies are designated Z 7 and Z 6 (yes, there’s officially a space between the letter and the number). The Z 7 is a pro-level camera – and, in many ways, a mirrorless version of the D850, but significantly more compact and lighter weight – while the Z 6 is very similar externally, but has a lower-res sensor and is quite a bit cheaper. Three Nikkor Z ‘S Line’ lenses are available virtually straightaway – a 24-70mm f4.0 zoom, a 50mm f1.8 standard prime and a 35mm f1.8 wide-angle. A further nine…

Phase One has launched its next generation of medium format digital capture backs which are designated IQ4 and includes models with a massive 150 megapixels of resolution. Phase One is also introducing the concept of the ‘Infinity Platform’ which incorporates the core of its Capture One image processing into the IQ4 backs themselves. The ‘Capture One Inside’ arrangement delivers enhanced RAW file workflow management with editing and processing functions now controlled within the capture back. Importantly, the Infinity Platform provides more scope for upgrading and adaption in the future to help address the issue of maintaining the future value of substantial initial investments in the hardware. There are basically two types of Leica user… the flaunt-it-if-you’ve-got-it show-offs (well, frankly, why not?) and those who like to be a bit more discreet. The new M10-P is aimed at the latter so it does away with the very recognisable ‘red dot’ logo on its front panel in favour of simple ‘Leica’ script engraved on the top cover. But this model is not just about cosmetics, Leica claims it has the quietest shutter release of any M series rangefinder camera ever. Given how quiet they all are (thanks to the absence of a reflex mirror), this is quite a claim. Leica says its operation is “almost inaudible”. Dr Kaufmann is late. To be honest, I’m surprised he’s finding time to do this interview at all, given how tight his schedule must be just now. Yesterday he hosted around 1000 guests and media at the formal opening of Stage III of Leitz Park, the grand vision for Leica Camera AG he initiated back in 2007 after the Kaufmann family took over ownership of the company. The ever-busy Tamron has announced yet another new lens for Canon and Nikon full-35mm D-SLRs. This time it’s an ultra-wide zoom in the shape of a 17-35mm f2.8-4.0 Di OSD which is due to launch right now in the Nikon mount with the Canon EF version following “at a later date”. Tamron says its new 17-35mm (designated Model A037) is currently the smallest and lightest lens in its class, weighing 460 grams (in both mounts) and measuring just 90 millimetres (Nikon). Tamron also says it represents a new line of ultra-wide zooms – compared to the existing SP 15-30mm f2.8 model – with an emphasis on optimum portability and increased affordability. It’s a sign that things are going well when a camera maker announces expansion plans for its lens production facility. Fujifilm says that growing demand for its X mount mirror-less camera bodies has made it necessary to invest in increased production capabilities at its Taiwa factory at Sendai in northern Japan. This will deliver a 70 percent increase in production volume by 2020. The new facilities at the factory – which is operated by Fujifilm Optics Co. Ltd. – will include a much larger and more advanced cleanroom area and more sophisticated equipment for automated testing and adjustment. Two new XF series models have been announced for launching later this year while a further three have been added to the X mount roadmap for launch in either 2019 or 2020.…

Digital storage experts Seagate and drone manufacturer DJI have collaborated to develop the LaCie DJI Copilot which is designed to allow the easier management and back-up of image files and video clips while flying on location. LaCie DJI Copilot enables drone users to quickly ingest and review their content in full resolution without a PC. This includes the playback, copying and managing of drone footage from the Copilot BOSS (Backup On-Set Solution) app by LaCie on a mobile device without the need to leave the field or boot up a computer. Users can also quickly connect and reference the built-in screen to initiate direct file transfer from an SD memory card to LaCie DJI Copilot – without the need of a laptop or a mobile network. CANON HAS ENJOYED HUGE success with its full-35mm format D-SLRs and the EOS 5D Mark IV is its best-selling model ever… which means it’s more than likely also the best-selling full-35mm ever. Sales have been split almost evenly between photographers and film-makers, and Canon has dominated the latter sector since the EOS 5D Mark II back in 2008. And this despite a concerted onslaught in recent times from the mirrorless camera makers.
