RENOWNED South African-born comedian Trevor Noah has been awarded the prestigious Dutch Erasmus Prize 2023, becoming the first humorist to be awarded the honour since Charlie Chaplin in 1965.
The international star received the award for his inspired contribution to the theme “In Praise of Folly”, named after Erasmus’s most famous book, which is filled with humour, social criticism and political satire.
As a humorist, television presenter, political commentator, philanthropist and author, Noah has staked his claim in the world of contemporary political satire.
The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation said in a statement that Noah, 39, was receiving the prize for “his inspired contribution” to the theme ‘In Praise of Folly’.
