It is January 2003 – many years before I began researching popular music professionally – and I’m flicking around the music channels on TV. Disillusioned by the usual paint-by-numbers chart fodder and ready to call it a day, I chance upon the video for a new song called In Da Club by a rapper called 50 Cent. The video shows a van driving through a desert on its way to the “Shady/Aftermath Artist Development Centre”, where lab-coated rap legends Eminem and Dr Dre observe a “patient” through a Perspex screen. The patient in question looks like he’s just burst off the pages of a comic book. With all bulging muscles, smouldering stares and chiselled good looks, he’s hanging upside down from a pull-up bar as he performs eye-watering stomach crunches.…
Eminem is fighting to stop two reality stars from trademarking their “Reasonably Shady” podcast name. The 50-year-old rapper, aka Slim Shady, has filed an “opposition” against Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon’s bid to own the title and believes it will damage his brand if their application is approved. Documents obtained by Page Six that were filed on February 14 and revealed on Monday show Eminem – born Marshall Mathers – said “Reasonably Shady” could “cause confusion in the minds of consumers” as they have known him as Slim Shady and Shady since the late 1990s. He has exclusively used both stage names for entertainment services since 1998 and owns the trademark for “Shady” to use on his merchandise. The Real Housewives of Potomac regulars Gizelle, 52, and 43-year-old Robyn –…
Jamie Lynn Spears is feeling “bittersweet” over the Zoey 101 reboot. The actress, 31, is the younger sister of pop legend Britney Spears, 41, but became famous in her own right when she starred in the title role of the Nickelodeon comedy-drama about life in a boarding school. She took to social media on Monday to tease that the upcoming Zoey 102 follow-up movie to the show would not be possible without the love and support of everyone around her. Alongside a series of snaps, she wrote on Instagram: “Bitter-sweet feels. I truly love all of these humans. “The new era of Zoey would not exist without every person doing their part to create this magical experience, including our amazing fans. Gonna need way more than 10 photos to include…
Cross Mad Men with The Jetsons, remove the former’s depth and the latter’s world-building, and you end up with Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen’s new Apple TV+ series, Hello Tomorrow! The 10-episode series is a gorgeous atomic-age confection set in a “retrofuturistic” version of the early 1960s – a Mayberry with jetpacks and hovering cars. Robots contoured like old Frigidaires walk the dogs and work the bars while Billy Crudup’s Jack Billings, a travelling salesman, spends his days talking the residents of this automated America into buying property on the moon. It’s an exciting approach to an era that’s been pretty well picked over – or could be, if the thought experiment got developed. The 30-minute episodes (critics received all 10) have a comic slant, but the tone is confused,…
Tinder and other dating apps have come to define modern dating, and notoriously so. Users download the Tinder app to their phones or other devices and can then view the profiles of potential dates nearby. If they think someone might be a match, they swipe to the right on their touchscreens to show interest. If the other person swipes right too, a chat can begin, which might lead to an in-person meeting. This initial introduction involves minimal information – a photo and some basic details about yourself. The result is that romance and trust are sometimes assumed to be missing from the dating process. Added to this are fears of harassment and scams as well as uninspiring (and often sexually aggressive) Tinder opening lines like, “Wow, your clothes would look…
The majority of tried-and-true strategies for improving your health are simple: if you want to lose weight, eat less and move more; if you want to increase your energy, get more sleep; etc. Some, though, are a little peculiar. Even though they may appear counter-intuitive, use these 10 suggestions to take your health to the next level. Instead of paracetamol, eat green apples It turns out that eating an apple a day can also prevent headaches in addition to keeping the doctor away. According to research by The Smell & Taste Therapy and Research Foundation, the smell of green apples lessens the severity of migraines. Researchers believe this may have something to do with the way that relaxing scents may ease tension and help individuals forget about their migraine agony.…
