Madonna has announced the North American and European dates of her concert tour, during which she will perform her most popular, era-defining songs. That’s 40 years worth of club dancing, provocative shape-shifting and sex-positive proselytizing. Madonna was one of the foundational female artists of the MTV dance-pop genre, and this tour will be a testament to that legacy and a test of cultural boundaries. In Madonna: The Celebration Tour, the performer will be pushing against timeworn assumptions about gender and age at a moment when public dialogue can be very mean and very unforgiving on those very subjects. Godspeed, Madonna. She announced her intentions on social media in a video that features a game of truth or dare – a reference to her 1991 film of the same name –…
Naomi Ackie, Daryl McCormack and Sheila Atim are among the nominees for the BAFTA Rising Star Award 2023. The trio are joined on the shortlist by Living star Aimee Lou Wood and Emily actress Emma Mackey. The award recognises young on-screen talent and is the only prize at the BAFTA Film Awards to be chosen by the public. Previous winners of the accolade include Lashana Lynch, Tom Holland and James McAvoy. McCormack – who starred in the film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande opposite Dame Emma Thompson – said the nomination had taken a while to sink in. He said: “I'm slow to let things sink in. When I moved to London, I looked at this category and the actors who have come through. To be part of it…
HBO’s The Last of Us, showing on M-Net and Showmax, places a lot of faith in its source material’s writing. The TV adaptation doesn’t veer far from the script set by the video game. That confidence is not misplaced. The 2013 PlayStation 3 title, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, broke ground as a video game that looked more like a prestige TV show or film than just about any other game before it. Players took on the roles of Joel, a long-grieving father turned black market smuggler who suffered immeasurable tragedy at the start of a zombie outbreak, and 14-year-old Ellie, an orphan who has only ever known the post-apocalypse – a militarised and zombie-ridden America. Nearly a decade after the first game’s release, old PlayStation fans and new…

The former One Direction singer is in joint place with Wet Leg for the most nominations at the February 11 ceremony at London’s O2 arena, with four apiece. One of the major issues with New Year’s resolutions is that people begin with such a strong sense of purpose and attempt to accomplish too many goals all at once, like eating healthily, exercising, learning a new skill or language, etc. It’s not surprising that many people would choose to join “Dry January”, a self-improvement challenge that involves abstaining from alcohol. It’s meant to inspire people to drink less by noticing how great they feel by the end of the month. Some people use these challenges to start alcohol consumption reduction or stop drinking entirely. However, the key to long-lasting change is manageable habits with realistic deadlines. The Alcohol for Change non-profit organisation in the UK launched the challenge as a public health initiative in 2013. Since then, “Dry January”…
Load shedding is one of the worst things to happen in this country. I used to think two hours of no electricity was insane until Eskom changed gears and moved us to stage 6, which is more than 10 hours of load shedding a day. The government doesn’t provide people with jobs, and load shedding takes away the little they’re trying to build. Fashion designer Thula Sindi said he had to give his staff a day off on Monday, because what was the point of them coming to work when they can’t get anything done? “Going halvies on an inverter with someone in my building, hopefully, it will give us 2-3 hours of power if the salesman is to be believed.” Another designer, Samkelisiwe Mhlongo-Setshedi, of St Reign, said load…
