More than two decades have passed since Princess Diana’s death in 1997. About 2.5 billion people watched the funeral, in which her sons, Prince William, 15, and Prince Harry, 12, marched silently behind her coffin. But now the two brothers, who once said they were “uniquely bonded because of what we’ve been through,” appear to be at a breaking point, with reports of a physical attack and sibling rivalry in Harry's new memoir, Spare. How did two of Britain’s royals who once seemed so close end up here? Below is a timeline of when the relationship changed. May 2018: The wedding When Harry married Meghan Markle at England’s Windsor Castle in 2018, William was the best man. Ahead of the ceremony, the two princes walked around the castle grounds side…
In its concluding season, the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials approaches a moment of danger. A story that began with the intimate world-building of parallel Oxfords must now take on the fate of the entire multiverse. Season three begins with our protagonist Lyra (Dafne Keen) lying in a stupor, drugged by her mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson). She is in the eye of a storm of cosmic proportions, as the Magisterium (authoritarian representatives of a false divinity) try to track her down before her friend Will (Amir Wilson) can. And before her father, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), incites a dimension-spanning revolution. How will the small screen deal with the big ideas that come to the fore as we approach the cosmic showdown? The problem stems from Philip Pullman’s decision…
THE South African Music Awards (Samas) has announced that the awards, following months of industry-wide consultations and reflections, will be undergoing some fundamental transformations. The event organiser, the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), made the announcement in a press statement this week. RiSA also announced that entries for the awards would open in the first quarter this year. The ripple effect of the date for entries is that the awards show will be staged only in the second half of the year. The “fundamental changes” are still yet to be made public, but come after last year’s awards which were clouded by a public outcry. Several artists such as Zakes Bantwini, DJ Maphorisa, Makhadzi and Lady Du went public with their dissatisfaction over the awards. The controversial stripping of…
Brad Pitt could relate to his Babylon character. The 59-year-old actor stars in the film set in the 1920s as the world-weary silent movie star Jack Conrad, and he shares a similar viewpoint to his alter ego. He told W Magazine: “Sadly enough, that melancholy may be my natural mode of being, some congenital melancholy. I think there’s a weariness that takes over with the character as he moves on. There’s a world-weariness that I can certainly relate to a little bit.” Pitt continued: “At this time, more of us are trying to tear each other down than help each other up. I get a little weary.” He said he immediately connected with the script from director Damien Chazelle. Pitt said: “I’d been following Damien since Whiplash. The script came,…
Deciding what to wear to the gym can be daunting for many, especially those just starting out. Many people are put off going to the gym because they don’t want to expose their bodies by wearing tight and revealing activewear. It’s especially challenging for those who, for religious reasons, need to be covered up and dress modestly. Modest activewear that’s specifically produced for the South African market did not exist until recently. Identifying this gap in the market, data scientist turned serial entrepreneur Zaheeda Duduzile Chauke was inspired to start her own brand called Breethe Modest Activewear. “Breethe Modest Activewear is for Muslim women, and all women who prefer to have extra-coverage clothing while being physically active,” said the 30-year-old mother of one. The idea for the modest activewear came…
