As someone who teaches and writes about Afrofuturism, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. I’m particularly excited about the introduction of Namor and the hidden kingdom of Talokan, which he leads. The first Black Panther film adhered to a longstanding practice in Afrofuturist stories and art by engaging in what I call “acts of recovery” – the process of reviving and celebrating elements of black culture that were destroyed or suppressed by colonisation. This practice is often linked to “Sankofa”, an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana that roughly translates to “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind”. Wakanda Forever pulls from the past in the same way, but with a twist: Talokan is inspired not…
“They call Dubai the Diamond City.” So begins the new drama-packed Netflix reality television show Dubai Bling, which follows a handful of self-proclaimed millionaires living – and quarrelling – in the sparkling hub of the United Arab Emirates. The show became an instant hit after debuting late last month. It was Netflix’s third most-watched non- English-language TV show on the week of its release. The next week, it rose to second place. Few, if any, shows from the Gulf have captured the attention of such an international audience. Even in the Middle East, the most popular shows have traditionally come from Egypt and Syria; shows produced in the Gulf, which tend to be more conservative and male-heavy, mainly appeal to local audiences. But the biting mean-girl theatrics, high-quality production and…

Lindsay Lohan got engaged on the set of Falling For Christmas. The 36-year-old actress – who is making her comeback to movies in the festive Netflix romcom about a hotel heiress who gets engaged to her boyfriend before losing her memory – tied the knot with Bader Shammas earlier this year and revealed that he proposed to her when she was at work but had to keep it a secret. She said: “Married life is great. He’s a great man, and I found my partner. “You never know if that’s gonna happen in life. But I get really shy talking about it. “I feel like when you have a partner you become protective of the two of you in a different way. We got married in April, actually, but the…
Luxury shoppers are getting younger and younger, forming a group that’s expected to buoy growth in the sector in the coming years with purchases being made from the age of 15, according to industry forecasts from consultancy Bain released on Tuesday. Concern has risen in recent months that appetite from financially stretched Gen Z consumers for “aspirational” purchases, from $300 (about R5 000) bucket hats to $900 sneakers, could wane, as inflation and rising living costs hurt the incomes of young US and European consumers while Chinese youth grapple with high levels of unemployment. But third-quarter results showed European luxury goods companies continue to defy the overall gloomy economic climate, as consumers used savings and a pent-up shopping appetite to treat themselves and buy designer fashion as pandemic restrictions have…
