There’s a lot of hype around amapiano. The South African dance music genre has dominated dancefloors since 2019, spreading from South Africa to West Africa and now to the world. But it’s time to peer through the hype and see if amapiano is able to transition from a cloistered club scene onto a global stage in terms of performance strength, conviction and credibility. Kabza de Small, DJ Maphorisa, Major League DJz, DBN Gogo, Lady Du – the list of amapiano stars is growing. Undoubtedly, though, there are concerns regarding the live performances of many. Beyond the gimmicks of slick studio technology and computer wizardry, it appears that many struggle to make an impact on stage. Surely, the questions of stage presence, control and front-person desirability are significant in any music…
Michael Corleone’s retreat to Sicily in 1972’s The Godfather starts out pleasantly enough – he meets and marries a local woman named Apollonia. But by the end of his stay, a car bomb kills her and shatters him. Arguably, her death serves as little more than a plot device and character motivation for her grieving husband. At one point in season 2 of HBO’s The White Lotus – which replaces the lush Hawaiian setting from the Emmy-winning first season with a White Lotus resort in Sicily, the place that eroded Michael’s soul – a small group visits the house where that very scene was filmed. In the driveway is a replica of the car. Inside it, a replica of Apollonia. “She blows up, like blows up? That’s a little, tasteless,…
Chadwick Boseman’s widow has admitted the last two years have been “challenging”. Simone Ledward Boseman has sat down for her first formal interview since the Black Panther actor died following a secret four-year battle with colon cancer in August 2020 and she explained her late spouse’s health began to “spiral” during the Covid-19 pandemic. Appearing on Good Morning America, she said: “It has been the most challenging two years I’ve ever had in my life ... “It was Covid when things were really starting to spiral. And that meant that everybody was in their house, and there was no pressure for anybody to go outside. “It seemed like, ‘Is this a crazy coincidence that we get to actually be inside, that we get to be here with family – together?…
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled that Rust script supervisor Mamie Mitchell can pursue her negligence and other claims against Hollywood star Alec Baldwin, who fired a loaded gun on the New Mexico set of the indie Western last year that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. The ruling comes as the Santa Fe District Attorney continues to scrutinise the police report about the fatal shooting, which occurred on October 21, 2021 at Bonanza Creek Ranch, reports Deadline. Baldwin had filed a motion to be removed from the civil lawsuit filed in November 2021 by Mitchell, who was standing near Hutchins and Souza when the gun was fired. Judge Michael E Whitaker also denied a motion from Baldwin and his El Dorado Pictures to strike…
While there are people who carry their personalities on their sleeves, there are others who don’t often share their true selves with the world. Whether you’re a misfit or a rebel forced to conform to the norms of society or a daydreamer stuck in a nine-to-fiver, it isn’t always easy to express the person you are. But if people looked a bit closer, they might just catch a glimpse of the real you. With a tiny tattoo here or a hidden body piercing there, many find ways to express themselves without shouting it out. Even a piece of jewellery can tell a tale. Kristin Weixelbaumer, Black Betty founder and jewellery designer, has drawn together six creative individuals, collectively called the Black Betty Club, to design a collection of pieces to…
On November 2, IOL published an article about ex-Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste’s girlfriend, Berdine Odendaal, who needs R10 000 a month for hair, make-up and beauty. That raised questions about whether hair and make-up cost R10 000 a month. Itumeleng Mokwatlo, a make-up and beauty guru who spends about R4 000 a month, says it depends on the type of styles one does and lifestyle. First, hair depends on the type you’ll be wearing. For example, weaves are one-off purchases. Treatment and styling cost about R1 500 a month. Make-up is not something you buy every month. Perhaps you might add foundation and concealers if you wear them daily, so its replenishment would be about R1 500. However, some people can’t do their make-up and have to hire a make-up…
