VISUAL artist Mondli Mbhele, whose work is inspired by South African historical events, has been named 2022 Sasol New Signatures Art winner.
The competition is hosted by Sasol and the Association of Arts Pretoria.
The announcement was made at an award ceremony at the Pretoria Art Museum this week, coinciding with a solo exhibition presentation by the 2021 winner Andrea du Plessis.
Mbhele, from Durban, a runner-up in the KZNSA Annual Members' Award, said the win was an honour.
“I am happy I won; my hard work finally has finally paid off.”
His said his work was a commentary on current challenges faced by millions of young South Africans, who were forgotten and disregarded, and with compromised futures.
