At some point in every little girl’s young life, she dreamt of wearing a crown. I was one of those girls. The crown I wished for was not only that of a princess who stood beside her handsome prince, but the magnificent diamond-studded crown that was worn by a beauty queen. Watching beauty pageants with my grandmother and the flamboyant uncle, who knew his Miss World from Miss Universe and who knew all the Miss South Africas, was an annual highlight. We would sit glued to the television in awe of the poise, grace and, yes, the beauty of the contestants. Their perfect swimsuit bodies and pearly white smiles. Back then, during the early 1980s, a girl like myself could only dream about ever being crowned Miss South Africa. Besides…
Steve Toussaint has been “racially abused on social media” after joining House of the Dragon. The 57-year-old actor – who plays Corlys Velaryon in HBO’s new Game of Thrones prequel – admitted he initially underestimated the response to his casting as the first prominent person of colour in the franchise and had to deal with vile trolls in the aftermath. He told The Hollywood Reporter: “When I got the gig, I literally said, ‘It’s just another role because I have black friends who had small parts or recurring parts in (Thrones). “I didn’t realise it was a bigger deal until I was racially abused on social media when it was announced. Yeah, that s**t happened.” He explained how one fan shared “an artist impression of the Sea Snake” alongside his…
Kenya Barris is to direct a Wizard of Oz remake. The Black-ish creator has been tapped to write and helm the Warner Bros reimagining of L Frank Baum’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story has been retold on the big and small screens several times, most famously in the classic 1939 movie that starred Judy Garland in the role of Dorothy. The plot follows Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl who is swept away by a tornado and finds herself – as well as her dog Toto – in the colourful Land of Oz The movie will be a modern reimagining of the classic musical and Kenya’s Khalabo Ink Society is producing. The movie is separate from New Line’s previously announced remake. That version will be directed by Nicole…
Note: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of Better Call Saul. Breaking Bad ended in 2013 with a Hamlet-esque body count, taking down Bryan Cranston’s hubristic meth-cook-turned-drug-kingpin, Walter White, along with many of his associates and foes. Its spinoff, Better Call Saul, recently concluded on a strikingly different note: with Walter’s one-time attorney and accomplice Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) looking wistfully, possibly for the last time, at his estranged ex-wife, Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) – his last tie to any sense of shame or morality he still allowed himself to feel. Between them were two chain-link fences, one keeping Saul in prison, where he’ll most likely die after receiving an 86-year sentence for his various crimes, including his role in the murders of DEA agents Hank Schrader…
