Jamal Grootboom jamald.grootboom@inl.co.za TONIGHT, 400 guests in their Regency-era finest garments, all preening and primping, will be doing their best to get the approval of Zozibini Tunzi, at “A Bridgerton Affair” hosted at the Inanda Club in Johannesburg. The former Miss Universe will stand in for Queen Charlotte, and take pride of place as the ultimate taste maker and gatekeeper, who decides who is worthy to be called the “Diamond of the Season”. The event is the official African premiere of the second season of the hit show, which has become a cult favourite. The first season of Bridgerton brought something few shows enjoy: worldwide adulation. The obsession with the Shonda Rhimes-produced show based on the series by Julia Quinn was so great, its actors became superstars overnight. Regé-Jean…
Bang Showbiz Shane Warne’s life is being turned into a miniseries. The cricket legend died suddenly aged 52 earlier this month while on holiday in Thailand, and now his life and career are set to be dramatised for an upcoming TV series. Australia’s Nine Entertainment Co is in the early stages of landing a production company, with the programme expected to air in 2023. The broadcaster’s head of drama, Andy Ryan, said: “Warnie’s life was so full of drama, like the man himself. This miniseries will be larger than life – entertaining, confronting, thought-provoking. We want to explore what made Warnie so special, and why he had such a powerful effect on people. “He was a sporting legend, a national treasure, international kind of icon, but he was also a…
Phoebe Macrossan Australian reality docu-soap series Byron Baes follows a bunch of young, beautiful Instagram influencers in New South Wales beach town Byron Bay. As a reality series, it ticks all the boxes for compelling content: picturesque trendy location, young conventionally-attractive (and slightly self- absorbed) cast, and a revolving schedule of fancy parties, fashion shows, product launches and competing love interests that let emotions spill over. Throw in a side of alternative health and wellness, crystals, and performative caring about the environment that comes with Byron, and you have a cringe-filled but binge-worthy watch. But while the show might be an easy watch, it’s worth thinking about what exactly goes into that Instagram-perfect “reality” television. Discovering the “ordinary” person behind the big movie star has always driven narratives of fame.…
Edward Enninful is “so thrilled” to show off the cover of his memoir, A Visible Man. The British Vogue editor-in-chief posted an image of the front of the book – which was snapped by Rafael Pavarotti, who has worked with brands such as Dior – on Twitter. The 50-year-old fashion editor wrote: “I am so thrilled to finally be able to share the cover of my forthcoming memoir, A Visible Man, photographed by @RafaelPavarotti_. “Released globally on 6 September 2022.” The book, according to the pre-order description, is a celebration of his life. “From his childhood bedroom in Ghana to the ground zero of grunge in 1990s London; the drag queens and rock stars of New York nightlife to the helm of the world’s most elite industry; this September, the…
Buhle Mbonambi While South Africa’s diversity is a wonderful characteristic and one we can be proud of, there are times when there is no consensus on what defines us as a nation. We saw this recently when Kopano Mashishi shared a map of the national dishes on the continent. Her reaction on Twitter to seeing bobotie listed as South Africa’s national dish was filled with contempt. “Every time I see bl**dy bobotie as our national dish I want to punch a wall,” she tweeted. Many Twitter users agreed with her. Questions ranging from ‘What does it even taste like?” to “Who made that decision?” were asked. And then came the statements that made us think. Many people admitted they had never eaten bobotie, so the question is raised: is it…
IN MAY, Christie’s will lead its marquee New York sales week with an auction of an Andy Warhol Marilyn silkscreen carrying an estimate in the region of $200 million (about R2.9 billion). If the 1964 work, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, sells for that amount, it will be the most expensive 20th century painting to ever sell at auction, according to Christie’s. “This is one of the most iconic paintings of our time,” says Alex Rotter, chairperson of 20th and 21st century art at Christie’s. “It's always been a coveted painting, and it’s always been an icon.” The artwork is being consigned by the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation in Zurich. Thomas was one of the most influential dealer/collectors of the 1980s, selling modern and Impressionist art to billionaires including Gianni…
