The 24-year-old US gymnast – who pulled out of four finals at the recent Tokyo Olympics due to her own struggles – has promised to support others in similar situations but only when she’s feeling comfortable and has dealt with her own issues. She told People magazine: “Sometimes when we speak on these things, then we become the face of it. I’m not sure if I’m completely ready for that aspect of it. Obviously, once I am a little bit more open about it, I’d love to help other people going through these things because it is very relatable to know that they are not alone with it. I think maybe one day but as of now, I have to focus on myself and getting myself right before I can…
The Westworld actress is one of several women to have accused her former fiancé, Marilyn Manson, of sexual assault and she has shown her disgust for rapper Kanye West, bringing the shock rocker out on stage at his Donda listening party last week. In a video shared to her Instagram account of her and collaborator Zane Carney’s Evan + Zane gig at Los Angeles’ Bourbon Room over the weekend, the 33-year-old star performed a cover of the New Radicals track You Get What You Give, which famously namechecks Manson and says he needs his ass kicked. Introducing the song, she said in the video: “I’ve been saving this but it seems like the appropriate time.” And during the Manson line, Evan raised her middle finger in defiance, prompting cheers from…
IT TAKES true perversity to programme The White Lotus, a new HBO miniseries about tourists whose expectations for their stay at a luxury Hawaiian hotel fall far short, at a time when Americans can finally travel in mass-vaccinated safety. What more relatable fantasy is there right now than the one of quarantine-induced marital or familial tension dissipating in the island breeze or under the sway of a mai tai on the beach at sunset? But creator Mike White (Enlightened) isn’t interested in dreams so much as the nightmare of reality. His shots of Hawaii’s palm trees, shorelines and sunrises should please the state’s tourism board, but their tropical idyll only underscores the fact that hardly any of his characters are able to appreciate the lush nature they presumably came to…
Gerry Cupido geraldine.cupido@inl.co.za When we see our favourite celebrities on the red carpet, we’re only seeing the end result, the final package of what a team of people have spent weeks putting together. Just as movie directors are the creative geniuses behind a successful film, stylists are the architects of those unforgettable red carpet moments. Los Angeles-based stylists Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, the style duo known simply as Wayman + Micah, are the dynamic team behind styling some of Hollywood’s A-listers. The formidable duo joined forces in 2013 and have since dressed stars like Tessa Thompson, Kiki Layne and Kelly Marie Tran. While stylists used to be the faceless, and often nameless, creatives who blend into the background, Wayman + Micah are very much in the foreground of the…
The rise of Instagram couture Sacha van Niekerk sacha.vanniekerk@inl.co.za “Instagram couture” is giving rise to a new era of affordable fashion that’s custom-made and even more coveted than high-end labels. Haute couture is the epitome of opulence in the fashion realm. With a minute client base of about 4 000 people worldwide, qualifying as an official haute couture house is a remarkably arduous feat. The term translates to “high sewing” in French and refers to the art of creating exclusive, one-off garments for affluent customers ranging from heiresses to entrepreneurs. To reach the stature of an official haute couture house, The Business of Fashion states that: “Members must design made-to-order clothes for private clients, with more than one fitting, using an atelier (workshop) that employs at least 15 full-time staff.…
