Going for gold may be the mantra at Tokyo 2020, but for a certain coterie of elite athletes, who pulled in joint earnings of over $353 million (about R5.2 billion) last year, dripping in gold is par for the course. In an ultra-competitive world where big talent transacts to big money, these Olympians have smashed, dunked and putted their way to the top of the wealth rankings, often sparking feeding frenzies among big-name sponsors eager for their endorsements. While the high cost of getting to the Games has seen some athletes turn to crowdfunding campaigns to help pave their way – trainers, state-of-the-art equipment and practice facilities don’t come cheap – others entered the arena with a regality reserved for the one percenters seeking the holy grail of GOAT status…

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck almost had an awkward run-in with her ex-fiancé Alex Rodriguez at a posh restaurant this week. The On the Floor hitmaker’s assistant had to quickly cancel the couple’s reservation at the fancy Bagatelle St Tropez restaurant on the French Riviera after she discovered the 46-year-old sportsman was dining there with another woman. A source told the DailyMail.com: “JLo had made a reservation at the same restaurant the same day. Her assistant turned up to check everything was okay, and there was A-Rod having lunch. She alerted JLo and the reservation was quickly cancelled.” Alex – who split from Jennifer in April 2021 following four years of dating – was reportedly with blonde sports presenter Melanie Collins. Debashine Thangevelo debashine.thangevelo@inl.co.za ProVerb (real name Tebogo Thekiso) is a well-known face on the small screen. Aside from being a co-executive producer on Mzansi Magic’s long-running reality show Idols SA, he’s the host. But there’s much more to this Kimberly-born celebrity, who started out as a rapper, releasing his debut album, Book of Proverb, in 1999. In 2006, he returned with his sophomore release, Manuscript, under a new record label. Although I wasn’t au fait with him as a rapper, I warmed up to ProVerb when he was cast in the celebrity edition of Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina. His amiable disposition endeared him to viewers and his fellow cast members, which took him far in the game. Little did he realise that his time in front of the camera…
Lutho Pasiya lutho.pasiya@inl.co.za Even if the sun isn’t shining, there’s something about a glass of chilled rosé that makes you feel as though you’re on holiday. The secret to this fruity wine – with its beautiful shades, ranging from a pale “onion skin” orange to darker pinks and even purples – is the reduced grape skin contact, giving it its distinctive colour. In fact, the longer the grape skins are left in the juice during the winemaking process, the darker the colour of the finished rosé. Best served chilled, rosé wine is a blend best savoured with friends, family around a pool or over an intimate, romantic dinner. Before you crack open a bottle of vino, we recommend taking a look at Thabang Mamkeli’s favourite picks. Mamkeli is a sommelier…
