Libraries ready to welcome readers AFTER five months, most of the community libraries in Tshwane are set to open to the reading public on Monday. And it is not only avid readers who cannot wait: the librarians and other staff have been hard at work preparing to welcome back their members. The opening of a few libraries, notably Alkantrant and Glenstantia in region 6, has been delayed, but the City hopes it will not be long before they meet Covid-19 compliance requirements and are able to reopen. In the mean time, members are welcome to use another library or the provincial e-books platform, OverDrive to borrow a digital title. Aside from the main Es’kia Mphahlele Library at Sammy Marks Square, the following libraries will be open Monday to Friday from…
‘Adjust 50-people limit to match gym size’ CHELSEA GEACH chelsea.geach@inl.co.za WHILE fitness enthusiasts rushed back to gyms and personal trainers began to work again this week, gym owners are fighting for the 50-person limit to be lifted. Under level 2 regulations, gyms can welcome clients back inside to train, but a blanket limit of 50 people applies to all clubs, regardless of their square metreage. Mark Field, managing director of Virgin Active South Africa, said the 50-person limit is nonsensical because it doesn’t allow for the massive differences in sizes of gyms – 50 people could be dangerously packed into a small gym, or spaced unnecessarily far apart in a large facility. Field was speaking in a webinar hosted by Discovery Vitality, in which doctors and leaders of the country’s…

On average, however, it is forecast to be clear and dry in Pretoria for most of September with more rainy days expected in October. As to whether winter is behind us, the weather forecasters remain cautious as there is the chance of another cold front… and never forget that it snowed in Gauteng in September 1981.…

Motsoaledi was announcing the services allowed to be issued by his department under level 2 lockdown during a media briefing in Pretoria. “We received complaints (and) some of them from members of Parliament about South Africans who are abroad (and) whose passports have expired and they were asking us to extend them,” he said. Motsoaledi, however, explained that the rules governing passports were not of his department, but of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. “According to those rules a passport is never extended,” he said. CONSERVATION New cheetah brings hope for species ZELDA VENTER zelda.venter@inl.co.za RIETVLEI Nature Reserve has a new little girl named Njozi – meaning “dreams” in Swahili. The 18-month-old cheetah arrived at the reserve in Tshwane on Thursday morning after a gruelling 14-hour journey from the Western Cape. Vincent van der Merwe of the Endangered Wildlife Trust said yesterday Njozi was doing well on her first day in her new surroundings although she had not yet eaten. He said it was probably because she was still a bit stressed. The City of Tshwane approved the relocation of the wild animal by the wildlife trust to the nature reserve, along with a donation of 250 blesbok, springbok, red hartebeest, black wildebeest and zebra. The cheetah’s roots can be traced back to a female…
