Grizzly Makers Challenge invited woodworkers from across the country to share their most creative projects. Sponsored by Grizzly Inc., the competition drew hundreds of incredible submissions, each showcasing the passion, craftsmanship, and innovation of the woodworking community. Thousands of votes poured in from across the country as family, friends, and fellow makers rallied to support their favorites. The final ten submissions were decided by popular vote via an online gallery. It’s difficult to describe the excitement I feel when I start a new double-bevel marquetry project. The ability to conjure up a picture from nothing and then turn it into a reality in wood is quite thrilling! One of my favorite Einstein quotes states: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” Being able to visualize something in your mind is a gift not everybody has. One of the most interesting aspects of a serpentine chest, with its front concave at the ends and convex in the center, is how the wood grain changes as the curves undulate across the front. A drawer front that begins as a piece of flat stock presents three distinct areas after shaping. The grain in the concave sections displays an “X” pattern, while the grain in the center section forms a circle. The patterns highlight the curved front to give the chest a more distinctive appearance. Serpentine chests first appeared in the Chippendale era around 1765. These chests could be considered a fraternal twin of the oxbow chest—also known as a reverse serpentine—which is convex at the ends and concave in the middle. I love boxes. They’re quick to make. They’re useful. They make great gifts. And, you can do fun fancy stuff like add marquetry on top. I love boxes enough that I wrote an entire book on them (shameless plug for “Complete Starters Guide to Making Wooden Boxes”). For this box, I start by milling all stock to the dimensions specified in the cutlist. Some of the dimensions are kept intentionally oversized because we’ll trim them to fit later. Because of that, make sure you start with the cutlist dimensions and not the final ones. Decide which two pieces will be your tailboards and which will be your pinboards. A hundred years ago, Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops were busy producing some of the most exceptional furniture of 20th century America. This interests me because, for years I described, through measured drawings, hundreds of pieces of furniture. I illustrated several books and articles for my brother (Kerry Pierce) that were published through Popular Woodworking. Many of the later projects provided the opportunity to examine antiques in museums. Prior to those visits, I’d only drawn antique replicas and other, more modern pieces. The first museum I visited was in the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky. Many of the pieces previously drawn were Shaker inspired, but I’d never seen an original.
