‘ IN SOUTH AFRICA, OPHTHAL-MOLOGISTS ARE USING THE AMNION DURING RECON-STRUCTIVE EYE SURGERY’ MAKING BIOLOGICAL products from the placenta sounds a little wacky (maybe not quite as crazy as consuming placenta that’s dehydrated in capsules), but that’s exactly what Next Biosciences, a medical laboratory based in Midrand, Joburg, is doing. It’s not the first to do so, though – since the 1900s, amniotic membrane, or amnion, has been used in surgery as a biological dressing.
