BUGS
In summer, many birds subsist mostly on insects, especially soft-bodied caterpillars, which are a staple food source for baby birds. Encourage butterflies and moths to lay eggs in your garden by planting asters, black-eyed Susans, coneflower, dill, fennel and nasturtiums. And avoid using pesticides or herbicides.
SEEDS
You can provide a steady supply of seeds with a bird feeder (see page 86), but you can also let the plants in your garden go to seed when they’re done flowering. Many of the plants that act as hosts to caterpillars are perfect for this, as are gay feather, goldenrod, tickseed and sunflowers.
