Four of my ballet friends in the photo were fair, and I looked like an Oompa Loompa! I went daily to tanning salons for probably my whole senior year, and then during college in California, I kept tanning. Ree’s husband, Ladd, isn’t often in the spotlight—he’s a soft-spoken behind-the-scenes kind of guy. But on Father’s Day, Ladd is the center of attention in the Drummond house. Ree puts together a menu of meat and potatoes for the whole family, Ladd mans the grill and the kids dote on Dad. Cherry Sherbet Prep time: 15 minutes Total time: 45 minutes (plus freezing) Makes: 6 servings 3 cups fresh Bing or other sweet cherries, pitted (about 1 pound)1 cup sugar1½ cups whole milk1 tablespoon heavy cream1 tablespoon cherry booze, such as kirsch, or clear rum (optional)Juice of 1 lemon 1 Combine the cherries and sugar in a large saucepan. Bring to a slow boil over medium heat and cook until the cherries are soft and the liquid is syrupy, 10 to 15 minutes. PLANTING *Start now! Most sunflowers are annuals, which means they grow for a single season. Start planting the seeds in soil in late spring or early summer. *Choose good soil. Sunflowers aren’t too fussy and will grow anywhere with good drainage, but you should avoid planting them in heavy clay or consistently wet ground.
