Every month, thousands of people journey to Pawhuska, OK, to Ree and Ladd’s general store and restaurant, The Mercantile. There, they can find almost anything a traveler could want: hearty down-home food, great coffee, one-of-a-kind housewares—and now there’s a place to stay the night, too. This spring, Ree and Ladd opened The Boarding House, an eight-room inn housed in two buildings adjacent to The Merc.
As with The Merc, which took four years from start to finish, building the inn involved a bit more work than Ree and Ladd expected: They had to replace all the windows and floors, as well as the roof, and because they wanted each room to have a distinctive look, the design decisions were endless.
