If you want to shoot polished, professional-looking portraits then knowing how to light a face with a flash is one of the most worthwhile skills you can master. To the uninitiated it can seem a bit daunting, but if you break the technique down into fundamentals then there’s no need for concern. RAISED IN Munich, close to the Bavarian Alps, Lorenz Holder has never lost his love for the mountains. As a teenager, he explored the landscape with a film camera, fascinated by the idea that one photo could describe a whole day. In 2003 he was traversing the landscape as a semi-professional snowboarder when a bad injury sidelined him for the full season. The passion wasn’t over, however. For my latest book Streets of America I wanted to capture a moment of time through street photography. I started my journey in spring 2023 going coast-to-coast from San Francisco to New York, but when I returned I realised I was missing an all-important front cover image, so I returned the following spring and to also visit some places I missed first time around, such as Las Vegas. Between 2014 and 2019 we were treated to a trio of Canon PowerShot G7 X-series compacts, but fans of the series have had a long six-year wait for a new model – with the Canon PowerShot V1 being finally revealed at CP+ in Japan in February last month. Canon’s latest RF lenses are some of the most razor-sharp optics the world has ever seen. Critical sharpness is key to a wide range of subjects: from nailing the focus on a footballer scoring the winning goal in a cup final, to pin-sharp product shots perfect for a billboard in Times Square. Blurred motion is a game-changer for landscape photos, even if you add it in Photoshop after. The original here is a case in point. The straight-out-of-camera colour version is rather drab and the choppy seas are a distraction. By contrast, the blurred black-and-white version is much stronger. The motion blur draws attention to the jagged shapes and contrasts with textures on the island. But a long exposure isn’t just a clever effect or trick, it’s also a way to convey the passing of time or a sense of isolation, which is why it works for our shot here. “Can you explain how the zebra settings help with getting correct exposure?”David Fitzgerald, Swansea BRIAN SAYS… When shooting movies, the zebra settings provide a guide to visually check that the exposure is suitable for the subject and that the highlights are not blown out unintentionally. Zebra patterns are a cross-hatched pattern overlaid on parts of the image corresponding to specific brightness levels. Zebra 1 pattern appears as diagonal lines from the top left and is commonly used for mid-tones. You can set the value and the pattern appears where any part of the frame is within +/-5% of that. Zebra 2 is a similar pattern but from the top right and is used to monitor highlights. Set it to 95% to ensure you don’t overexpose important parts of the frame.…

Sigma’s press event in Tokyo was packed full of announcements, including a branding and logo overhaul, new full-frame compact ‘BF’ camera and 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports lens. But flying somewhat under the radar was the new Sigma 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 | C, Sigma’s seventh APS-C optic for Canon RF mount. The new lens is remarkably light and compact, with a weight of just 615g and dimensions of 73.8x121.4mm when collapsed to its 16mm mark (though it roughly doubles in length at the maximum zoom of 300mm). Of course, on a Canon APS-C body like the EOS R7, you have the 1.6x crop factor to account for, so this lens actually performs more closely to a 25.6-480mm in full-frame terms. THE MISSION Use the Displace and Halftone filters to create a retro scanlines effect Time needed 15 minutes Skill level Intermediate Kit needed Affinity Photo In this project we’ll craft an old-school CRT scan effect using a combo of filters in Affinity Photo. This reduces a photo to a series of wavy lines, as if viewed on a retro monitor. The effect works best with subjects photographed against a black backdrop, as this gives clear definition to the lines, allowing them to fade out. To make the wavy lines we’ll use the Halftone Filter in combination with the Displace filter. Halftone lets us create simple horizontal or vertical lines to overlay onto our image. The distinctive and unusual appearance of the Five Sisters shale bings near my village of West Calder, West Lothian, inspired me to explore infrared (IR) photography. These giant remains of the shale oil industry dominate the landscape, acting as a reminder of an industrial past that shaped the area. I’ve always been fascinated by their dramatic presence, particularly the way they transform under different weather conditions and from varying perspectives. Two years ago, after participating in an inspiring Royal Photographic Society event, I decided to delve into IR photography. To get started, I purchased a second-hand Canon EOS RP that had been professionally converted for IR photography. This ensured that I could focus on creative experimentation without the risk of damaging any of my equipment during a DIY conversion. My goal…

Canon DSLRs frequently offer enhanced focus capabilities when faster lenses are used. The AF sensor receives a fraction of the light that passes through to the optical viewfinder. Many DSLR cameras featured AF points that worked in higher precision modes when f/2.8 or faster lenses were used. Pro photographers often valued the subject separation of a faster lens and the increased AF performance. For mirrorless, the AF systems are very different and can focus with much less light than a DSLR. This is why it was possible for Canon to introduce lenses with f/8 or f/11 apertures that still autofocus. If you need the subject separation that a fast aperture lens provides, fast aperture is still the solution, though lens blur added in post processing can achieve a similar result.…

What to look for Canon EOS camera ranges Canon splits its EOS range into mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. Its older DSLR line-up includes beginner, enthusiast and pro ranges; the EOS 4000D is the most basic, the 850D for intermediates, the 90D and full-frame 6D Mk II for advanced enthusiasts, and the full-frame pro-level 5D and 1D lines.
