01 WINNER BATTERSEA LIGHT TRAILS BY JUNE FOX June’s beautiful picture of London’s iconic Battersea power station at night impressed us this month and takes the top spot. While it might not have the most elaborate light painting or light graffiti that we’ve seen in this month’s contest, keeping things simple has allowed her to perfect her composition with the wonderful blue, red orange and white lights from the trains guiding the eye through to the station in the background. The Battersea towers have lights on them which help them to pop out and by shooting in the blue hour she’s retained some lovely moody light in the sky without the scene turning totally black. When shooting towards the sun at sunset it can be tricky to record a balanced exposure. If we expose for the sky, the land looks too dark but if we expose for the land the sky can blow out. At times like this it’s usually worth shooting a bracketed sequence of exposures, in which your Canon EOS camera will take under and overexposed frames alongside the ‘correct’ exposure sandwiched in the middle of them. This way, you have several options. You can pick the best exposure from the bunch, or merge the set to an HDR image, or blend the exposures later on. The last option usually involves opening two or more images into your editing software then masking one image to blend it with another. This is where Live…

Photo essays from PhotoPlus readers and professional photographers alike I set myself the target of photographing Tawny Owls at night. My good friend John Stanton of Millers Wood Photography Hides told me he had some visiting through the night. Upon arrival at the woods, I met with John to discuss how to set up a post for them to land on and my lighting. “What would be a good upgrade for my EOS 80D; I like to photograph birds, macro and fast action?” Mark Talbot-Sykes, Norwich? BRIAN SAYS… You should look at the modern mirrorless cameras as they all add a lot of extra capability to track wildlife and fast action. There are two routes you might consider, and it may be determined by the lenses you currently have. Assuming you have lenses for a crop sensor camera, then look at the EOS R7. This camera adds IBIS, faster shooting speed and AF suited to wildlife and action. If you have full-frame lenses, the EOS R6 Mark II has a highly advanced AF, fast shooting speed and is excellent even in low light. Any LP-E6 type batteries you have will work with either camera.…

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C (stands for Contemporary) is, first and foremost, Sigma’s debut lens for the Canon RF mount. Without going into all the politics and restrictions put on third-party lens companies, we’ve waited six years for the first RF Sigma lens, and the wait has been worth it – provided you’re an APS-C Canon EOS R mirrorless camera user. That’s because the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is specifically an RF-S lens. Choosing lenses Key factors to watch out for The main factors to consider in a lens are its focal length, maximum aperture and if it’s full-frame compatible or not. We’ve categorized lenses by focal length range from wide-angle to telephoto. The larger a lens’s maximum aperture, the ‘faster’ it is. Zooms are more flexible than primes, but tend not to have such fast maximum apertures. Full-frame lenses will also work with ‘crop-sensor’ EOS DSLRs, but crop-sensor lenses aren’t compatible with full-frame cameras. For Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras the dedicated Canon RF lenses are best, but using Canon’s Mount Adapter EF-EOS R enables EF-S and EF lenses to be used on EOS R cameras. As part of our recent wildlife photography trip to Thailand, we included two full days dedicated to searching for snakes in and around Kaeng Krachan National Park. I was eager to see how my Canon EOS R7 and Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens combination would manage with photographing wildlife in general and snakes in particular. Overall, Thailand has some amazing snakes, Kaeng Krachan itself is home to around 70 species and I wondered how many we would encounter during our short visit. The conditions were perfect for a high-key approach, where the camera’s exposure is pushed to the right of the histogram, brightening the scene and rendering a flat, greyish sky to white. On this part of the track I had to shoot through the fencing, so decided to pan with the cars to reduce the visibility of the safety fencing. This photo shows Samuel Harrison racing through Hollywood corner in the Historic Formula Ford 2000 Championship. I used my EOS 5D Mark III with a 70-200mm lens, reducing the shutter speed and keeping the ISO low. The light was quite good, and this resulted in the need for f/9.5 instead of my preferred f/5.6 to f/8 for motorsport photos.
