There are more Canon EOS camera options than ever from which to make a selection. This is both a blessing and a curse! On one hand it’s nice to have a wide range of exciting possibilities, but on the other the choice can be daunting. Just what is the difference between a mirrorless camera and a DSLR? Any landscape photographer worth their salt won’t go anywhere without their circular polarizer filter. Polarizing filters physically cut out certain types of light waves using a microscopic structure – while colour can be deepened in Photoshop CC the harmful effects of polarized light remain, so software does not remove the problem at its source. Nor can software replicate the stunning effect you get twisting the polarizer to capture the deep blue skies contrasting with white clouds, or to remove reflections on water. We also can’t emphasize enough the importance of ensuring your landscape compositions are both level and straight; this is where a good tripod head comes into its own. I took these photos in a portrait shoot at TBG Studio in Newmarket. I had worked with the dancer, Ayla Rose, several times and we had discussed a flour shoot. It’s a messy business and studios are reluctant to allow it, so when Ayla negotiated a shoot, I jumped at the chance! I’m fascinated that a stills image can still portray artistic movement. Whilst Ayla’s poses suggests movement and a change of balance, the flour trail clearly shows the arcs and grace of her movement. One of my goals with this shoot was to create pictures which I could use in club competitions. Letter of the Month I always learn something new with every read of PhotoPlus: The Canon Magazine, and I particularly liked your article ‘25 Canon Settings You Should Be Using!’ in issue 220, August 2024, because when I purchased my first EOS camera many years ago you would get a instruction manual with it. Lenses are arguably the most important aspect of a photographic system. Even if a camera appears to have high-resolution sensor specifications, it is the range of lenses available which defines your landscape photography. If your Canon EOS sensor is 30Mp or even 50Mp, any optical flaws a lens might have are so much more difficult to hide. Generally speaking it is better to have a set-up where the camera is complemented by the lens. This way you can be certain you are getting the absolute best possible images from your camera, and as you upgrade (which is likely to happen more often for camera bodies than lenses) you will definitely see an improvement in quality. PAWEŁ Uchorczak is both a landscape photographer and an explorer. For many years the choice has been RAW or JPEG, but now there’s a third option with HEIF, so which one might suit you best? The ubiquitous JPEG is the most popular and accessible format for images. In the modern age of photography many effects can be applied in software. While this is partly due to convenience and expense, there are actual benefits from minimizing the use of physical, hardware accessories. For example, when using cheaper lenses, which are already going to render images with less sharpness and contrast than professional optics, it is a good idea to avoid adding too many filters to the lens, which can further refract the light and blur detail. Canon expert Brian explains how to squeeze the best quality from your landscapes by processing RAW images Landscape images are the culmination of planning with the right location, the right light and the right weather. In-camera captures are adequate but processing RAW images with Digital Photo Professional lets you get the last bit of quality and deliver the best result. There may be multiple stages to improve a photo from colour rendition, sharpening, and even selective adjustments. The Picture Style defines the base colour rendition of all images. Canon has announced its new EOS R5 Mark II professional camera, the follow-up to the four-year-old EOS R5 that launched back in July 2020 – which is still widely regarded as one of the best full-frame mirrorless cameras ever made. Canon claims the new R5 Mark II model is ‘the pinnacle of all-round versatility and hybrid creativity’.
