This was exactly what happened in the summer of 2015 in the picturesque Loire Valley, in central France. If you’re wondering whether artificial intelligence will lead to the death of photography, here’s a good news story – AI is amazing at fixing noisy photos. We tested Adobe’s new AI-powered Denoise function on several noisy, high-ISO images. The bird photograph is a real and proper test – a heavily-cropped, underexposed image shot in a dark forest taken at ISO25,600. The Denoise tool worked wonders on this and other grainy photos, giving better results than with older manual noise tools. This Adobe tool is particularly effective at preventing colours from bleeding into one another. In our photograph, the original colours were barely perceptible but the tool pulled out the blues and reds in the subject to an astonishing degree. It also cleaned up and revealed details that were almost invisible…

Speed up editing with recipes Edit a single photo and apply processing settings to pictures taken at the same time With fast frame continuous shooting rates and the almost endless capacity of memory cards it’s all too easy to capture large numbers of photos, but this means of a lot of editing. It doesn’t matter if you shoot RAW or JPEG, recipes simplify the edit workflow. Edit one image, and apply the edits to multiple similar shots. Saving recipes with preferred image styles brings speed and consistency. The number of photos we take has vastly increased compared to the past, making a much harder task to refine and edit all the shots. THE CONTENDERS Get up close and personal to small subjects and most macro prime lenses can deliver a magnification ratio of 1.0x or 1:1. But what exactly does that mean? In a nutshell, at their shortest focus distance, they can reproduce objects at full life size on the camera’s image sensor. An area measuring just 36x24mm would completely fill the image sensor of a full-frame camera, and it’s a mere 22x15mm if you’re shooting with an APS-C format body. A couple of the lenses in our test group go even further, boosting macro magnification to 1.4x, 2.0x and even more. If you’re not impressed at the prospect of full-sized reproduction, just bear in mind how much larger the resulting image is when you view it on screen or in print.…

Portraiture can at times feel like a bit of a dark art. There’s so much jargon and little pieces of equipment to get up to speed on, from flashes to guide numbers, and lighting modifiers to triggers. It can be difficult to know where to start! That’s why this month we’re taking portraits back to basics using a single continuous light bulb to achieve three completely different looks. You can take these shots at home with a basic setup, you’ll need a dark background, a few lightstands, a curtain pole and then a few extra props that we run through below. Bold colours can really help to make an image pop, whether on screen or in print. But the colours in a photo can come out disappointingly weak or lacking in punch. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to tease out the colour and give our images greater impact. One such tool is the HSL adjustment in Affinity Photo. HSL stands for Hue, Saturation and Luminosity. The tool gives us independent control over these three parameters. The Hue lets us shift a colour to something different, while the Saturation lets us control the intensity of the colour, and lastly the Luminance slider lets us adjust the brightness of colour ranges. “Why does my Canon EOS R10 have three settings for the AF area, is there a way it can be simplified?” George Hazel, Kendal BRIAN SAYS… The EOS R10 and some other EOS cameras have the setting to allow different AF points and areas to be selected automatically depending on the camera orientation. Conventionally you might want the whole AF area in landscape orientation, but switch to a smaller AF zone in the top of the frame for either of vertical orientations. As any photographer worth their salty tripod legs knows, sunrise and sunset is a good time to head out to the beach with the camera. When the sun goes low and reflections tint the water we can be treated to one of the most gorgeous sights of the great outdoors. But the best sunset photos capture more than just the bold clouds and vibrant colours. What we need is a subject to frame against the sky. Because of the stark contrast between the brighter sky and dark foreground, it’s often impossible to record detail in both areas. Colour plays an important role in our photography, of course. That may be even truer for movies, where famous directors such as Wes Anderson use simple palettes to create striking scenes. But for much of its history, there was no colour at all in photography. We may currently be seeing a resurgence in film photography as those brought up with digital cameras seek new ways of creating unique images. But even processing film is easy compared with what came before. It was during the American Civil War that photographers travelled in wagons that also served as a darkroom. To create an image, they had to pour volatile collodion liquid over a glass or tin plate. They would then soak this in a silver solution to make it light sensitive, then…

Exposure problems solved Why do some pictures appear too dark – and others too bright? Exposure problems broadly fall into two camps: overexposure (too bright) and underexposure (too dark). These errors are typically down to your EOS camera’s light meter; rather than measuring the light that’s falling on your subject, it measures the light that’s reflected by the scene into your camera lens. The amount of light that’s reflected by different subjects varies though, as does the intensity of the light falling on them. There are several different light metering modes that can be used. The default option on an EOS camera is Evaluative. It’s an intelligent ‘pattern’ metering mode that takes multiple light meter readings and compares any variations in the brightness values before calculating a final exposure. To…

Exposure lock is a term that applies to different kinds of exposure and how long you might want the exposure to be locked. EOS cameras have two independent metering systems, one for ambient light (AE-lock) and another for a camera controlled Speedlite (FE-Lock). Some cameras combine the lock of both flash and ambient, others feature individual lock buttons for flash and ambient. If you’re using One-Shot AF, you can unwittingly lock the exposure. With One-Shot AF, when focus is achieved, cameras automatically lock the exposure with Evaluative metering. This makes sense as Evaluative is using info from the focus system to determine the position of the subject, and recomposing might change the brightness of the scene by including more brighter or darker areas, but not changing the exposure on the…

Choosing lenses Key factors to watch out for The main factors to consider in a lens are its focal length, maximum aperture and if it’s full-frame compatible or not. We’ve categorized lenses by focal length range from wide-angle to telephoto. The larger a lens’s maximum aperture, the ‘faster’ it is. Zooms are more flexible than primes, but tend not to have such fast maximum apertures. Full-frame lenses will also work with ‘crop-sensor’ EOS DSLRs, but crop-sensor lenses aren’t compatible with full-frame cameras.
