Canon’s EOS-1D X is a widely respected camera used by professional news and sports photographers, but with the Olympic games around the corner, Canon has given it a significant revamp and introduced the 1D X Mark II to keep its customers happy. The headline improvements include a hike in the maximum continuous shooting rate, an improved autofocus system and the ability to shoot 4K (4096x2160) video at up to 60fps. Like the camera it replaces, the EOS-1D X Mark II has a fullframe sensor, but its resolution has been raised from 18.1 million effective pixels to 20.2 million. Having fewer pixels than the 5DS means that each of the 1D X Mark II’s photoreceptors is larger and therefore able to capture more light, so images are likely to have less…

Wide-ranging enhancements available in image-editing programs enable you to bring out the hidden beauty of your shots, but it can be a labour-intensive and long-winded process. There’s a valid argument that says it’s better to capture images that are closest to how you want them while you’re actually shooting. That’s often impossible unless you use a filter, or even a combination of filters. Let’s take an early-morning landscape shot as an example. The sky is likely to be vastly brighter than the land beneath. You could expose for the sky, in which case the land is likely to look dark and murky, or you can expose for the land and the sky will be washed out, and may even turn into a vast expanse of blown highlights. Monochrome made easy Having read the May issue (114) of PhotoPlus, I was inspired by James Paterson’s ‘Pro Monochrome for the masses’ Lightroom tutorial and I’ve just downloaded the Nik Silver Efex Pro plug-in as it’s now free. It’s an amazing piece of software! I went through my photos and found some shots that I took at the Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre in the West Country and loaded up some shots of old cars. I tried various presets and this one was my favourite. I took it on my Canon 100D, using a Sigma 18-250mm lens at 26mm. The exposure was 1/640 sec, f/4, ISO100. W hen it comes to prime lenses for portraiture, 85mm is a perennially popular focal length, when using a full-frame body. Established fast, faster and fastest choices include the budget-friendly Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM (£240/$350), the mid-range Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM (£620/$900) and the pricey Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM (£1500/$2000).
