01 ALWAYS USE A TRIPOD Put the camera on a tripod and select your sharpest aperture. Set exposure for the foreground, ignoring the sky, and don’t worry if your histogram is ‘clipping’. 02 STARTING POINT Focus on the closest point in the frame. This is often right at the bottom, but could be closer if foreground objects have height. If in doubt, focus closer than you need. 03 MAKE FIRST EXPOSURE Now make your first exposure. Next, focus a little further away and then take another exposure. Repeat this with small steps until infinity. 04 MAKE FOCUS-STACK SERIES OF SHOTS At infinity, your background will be tack sharp and the foreground blurred. You have now a series of pixels that are correctly focused. 05 EXPOSE FOR THE SKY Increase shutter…

A trip into Jerusalem on Christmas Day took us into another world … of poverty, conflict and children growing up in a refugee camp In the winter of 2018, Rachel and I headed out on a life-changing trip, a desert adventure into Jordan with an Israeli bolt-on. The mission was to head south to Petra and Jordan as a recce for a future photographic tour, but what it turned into was an education I will never forget. Here’s a fun project to try over the festive break, and a great way to learn new camera and editing skills. Over the next few pages we’ll show you how to make a Christmas snow globe composite. We’ll shoot two separate images for this – first the children then the snow globe, and blend the two together in Photoshop. To add a little extra depth and colour to the composite, we have also supplied a collection of lovely bokeh images for you to use (download link on page 48), either in this project or to add an atmospheric glow to any festive photo. 01 SUPER-POWER PRIME We’ve used the EF 500mm f/4L super-tele prime on a crop-sensor Canon EOS 7D Mark II, which produces an effective focal length of 800mm – ideal for getting decent-sized shots of small, shy birds such as the western yellow wagtail. 02 EXPOSURE SETTINGS We shot in Manual mode, and set the aperture wide open at f/4, and ISO to 800 to get a fast shutter speed of 1/2000 sec for sharp shots. When it comes to shooting landscapes, we can’t always be in the right place at the right time. Of course, if you are in a good location, the first of these boxes will automatically be ticked, but getting the right conditions to coincide with the time you are there is all down to Mother Nature! You may have the bones of a great scenic shot but if the sky is a dull grey – or an equally dull, plain, cloudless blue – all you can do is wait, and hope. 01 GET STARTED Select the Clone Tool, hold Alt and click on an area to sample pixels, then paint to clone them elsewhere. Keep Alt-clicking regularly while painting to choose new source points. With Aligned ticked at the top, your source point will move with your painting. If you want to source the same point over and over, untick Aligned. DANI, SO tell us, how did you begin your photographic journey? I started taking photos over 12 years ago. I wanted to photograph our family dog, Ashley, in a woodland environment. My dad had a decent camera that I started to borrow and I would spend my afternoons after school in my local woodland. What does linked shot mode do, it displays on the LCD when the Speedlite Transmitter wireless button is pressed and held down? Molly Franks, Preston BRIAN SAYS… Linked shot is a special mode of operation that can be used to trigger multiple cameras from a single primary camera. Linked shot has two settings, sender/master and receiver/slave. Only one device will be the sender unit, all others will be receivers. When a photo is taken, all the receiver units trigger the shutter on the camera they are fitted to. Linked shot is one way to capture multiple viewpoints of a subject during a shoot, although there is a delay of approximately 1/10 sec between the shutter on the sender and receiver units operating. Canon has now launched the new Canon EOS R6 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera and it’s packed with some sporty improvements, aiming to raise the bar as a world beater in the ‘smaller fast camera’ class. For me, landscape photography is all about the emotion. It’s about creating atmosphere and interpreting how I feel about my scene using equipment and techniques that produce the finest quality. It’s a weird synthesis of left and right-brain thinking, where I get to solve technical and logistical challenges, like getting to the location in the first place, and then hopefully create something magical as well. I am quite comfortable comparing my approach to landscape photography with producing a Hollywood feature film, where it’s all about visual storytelling and creating a cinematic experience. However, I imagine other landscape photographers would prefer their work to be compared to a BBC wildlife documentary, where production values are designed to produce a ‘genuine’ or ‘realistic’ experience. 01 WHAT’S YOUR SUBJECT? While it’s great to have specific photographs in mind, don’t aim to directly copy what you’ve already seen. Use Google Images and Maps to research your location and then develop your own ideas. 02 TIME OF YEAR? Some locations work better at specific times of the year. Study your subject to see how different seasons and weather conditions impact your subject and ease of accessibility. 03 TIME OF DAY? While sunrise and sunset may be the best times, is it possible to be there at this time? Will you have to camp? Are there access restrictions? 01 USE THE RIGHT TOOLS When producing a digital signature, it should be similar to using a pen or pencil to write on paper. Try a pen and tablet like Wacom’s Intuos or MobileStudio Pro. 02 SEPARATE FILES Rather than trying to get the signature right on the print file, use a separate file which you can re-scale later. Open a new file and try sizing it to 3600 x 300 pixels at 600 ppi. 03 SET YOUR BRUSH A suggestion is to use the pencil tool (not the brush) and try the following settings: 12 pixels, 10% hardness and 100% black. 01 CAMERA SETTINGS We set the camera to Manual Mode with shutter speed 1/250 sec, aperture f/6.3 and Auto ISO. WE SUPPLIED 10 fantastic images of bokeh to use in this project (download link, bottom left), but you can also blend them with other portraits for wonderful effects. All you need to do in Photoshop is copy the bokeh image on top of your chosen photo then change the layer blend mode to Screen. You can add a layer mask and paint black to tweak which parts of the bokeh are visible. You could also shoot your own bokeh photos. There are plenty of opportunities to capture twinkly out-of-focus lights at this time of year. Have you ever seen one of these light orb photos before and thought to yourself ‘How is that pulled off?’ Well, in this project we show exactly how! The first time I saw a light orb photo, I thought it was a camera trick created entirely in post production. It is, however, a light painting technique, where spinning a torch around carefully in a circular loop, and then moving from side to side to creates the 3D spherical shape. 01 START THE SKY REPLACEMENT TOOL Open a landscape image with an unsatisfactory sky into Photoshop CC, or use my shot of Stanage (in the Replace Skies folder of this issue’s download) for practice. Go to Edit > Sky Replacement and click in the Sky box to open a dropdown menu. If you haven’t used this tool before or changed anything, you’ll see the default folder groups called Blue Skies, Spectacular and Sunsets. Open these up with the arrows next to the names, and click on any sky to pick one you think will suit your foreground. Compositing is one of the most creative techniques in image editing, and it’s easier than you might think. All it takes is a few simple layer skills. Affinity Photo offers a host of useful compositing tools to get you started, from clever selection features that let you isolate and cut out objects, to intuitive masking and transforming tools that let you position each element with ease and blend everything together into a cohesive whole. In this project, we’ll explore these tools and features while creating a great flower portrait composite. Winter wonderland June headed to Yellowstone National Park to capture the great scenery and big bison transformed by magical snowy conditions I purchased my first Canon DSLR in 2013 and my passion for photography snowballed from there. I enjoy all genres of photography, particularly landscapes. My favourite locations have to be snowy ones – I simply love the snow! Printing photos direct from DPP Producing digital photos is easy with DPP and a Canon printer for more vibrant prints While digital cameras have made it simple to create digital images, printing images often appears to be considered a dark art akin to a traditional photographer’s darkroom. Unsurprisingly Canon makes it simple to print images directly from DPP to a range of photo printers, and especially Canon printers. You don’t even need to convert Raw images to JPG or TIFF before printing. One of the reasons photographers use Canon cameras is the colour science, so it is natural that the science flows through the entire Canon range from capture to output. DPP offers several ways of printing your photos and none of them require you to convert your Raw image…

EOS cameras feature sensors that offer amazing low-light image quality, yet still sports photographers require large, long, fast aperture telephoto lenses. Factor in that the aperture value is a ratio of the effective diameter of the aperture divided into the focal length; so a 600mm f/4 lens needs a 150mm diameter aperture making lenses big and requiring large optical elements. There are multiple factors that determine what kind of gear is needed to succeed: fast shutter speeds, a high ISO performance, fast, accurate and responsive AF, plus high frame rates. Capturing dynamic action invariably requires fast shutter speeds to avoid subject blur. No amount of optical or in-body stabilisation can compensate for a moving subject. After a quarter of a century, the Canon RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM finally replaces the legendary Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM. The new RF model will natively fit EOS R mirrorless cameras, and while the focal length remains identical, it has a slightly wider maximum aperture of f/1.8, making it a third of an f-stop brighter. The RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM has image stabilisation that Canon claims will deliver sharp shots when shooting 5.5-stops slower than usual, or a 8-stops with an EOS R system body with in-body image stabilisation, such as the new EOS R6 Mark II. 01 SET UP YOUR TRIPOD Lock your camera on a tripod and use a remote control or the self-timer to fire the shutter. If your camera has a mirror, lock it up (or shoot in Live View mode). 02 SET APERTURE PRIORITY The easiest camera mode to use for this test is Aperture priority – Av mode. Turn off Auto ISO as you don’t want different ISO settings to have an impact on the results. 03 SET PRECISE FOCUS The most precise way to focus is manually in Live View at 100% magnification. 01 STARTING POINT Landscapes with complicated horizons become a problem with a graduated ND filter. It darkens the clouds and sky and everything above the horizon line. 02 DARKEN TO TASTE The solution in Photoshop begins with a Curves adjustment layer, the sky is darkened down to taste, ignoring the tree initially. Notice how the tree is now too dark. 03 EXPLORE THE CHANNELS Create a mask using a channel. Go to the Channels panel and choose the one that looks the most like a black and white mask of your subject. Here, it is the blue channel. 04 CHANNEL BECOMES SELECTION Click the circle at the bottom of the Channels panel. Click the RGB composite channel and return to the layers. With the selection active, add a Curves layer.…

TIDY UP REFLECTIONS Whenever photographing glass, whether for a project like this or for any other kind of job, the surface of the glass is likely to need cleaning up to make it look perfect. This starts during the shoot, so make sure the glass globe is as spotless as possible and free from finger prints. Once working up the image, we can use Photoshop’s Spot Healing brush tool to paint over marks, dust and distracting reflections to remove them. Do this on a new empty layer above your image layer, and set the tool to ‘Sample All Layers’ so that the retouching remains non-destructive. 01 CUT OUT THE KIDS Open the image of the children (download link below). There is a special joy when photographing wildlife with a massive super-telephoto 500mm prime lens. You really feel like you have a big, powerful optic that will help you capture frame-filling shots of the smallest subjects. There are both pros and cons, though, to super-telephoto prime lenses. Prime lenses generally offer superior image quality, due to fewer moving elements compared with zoom lenses. There’s also the wider apertures such as f/4 on the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM we’ve used. The faster maximum aperture blurs backgrounds for a dreamy bokeh look, so subjects stand out from their surroundings, plus these ‘fast’ apertures also produce faster shutter speeds for sharper shots at the longer focal lengths by over-riding camera shake shooting handheld, as well as freezing fast-moving nature. 01 TRIPOD Working at night with long exposures demands a tripod to ensure that the landscape remains pin-sharp. You’re also going to be stacking a handful of orb photos together so a locked-off tripod helps keep all of the images in alignment. 02 CAMERA Any Canon EOS DSLR or EOS mirrorless camera with manual modes will be perfect for this technique. You don’t need the latest model with 30+MP or a super-high burst rate, so even entry-level Canons will be just fine for light orb photography. 03 LENS A wide-angle lens works well for light painting photography as it will give you a wide composition and plenty of space to build up a few orbs, as well as less chance of your orbs being cut off by the edge of…

The basic mechanics of the Clone Tool are very simple: you Alt-click to sample pixels from one place, then paint to replicate them in another. But there is a real skill involved in cloning, and the tool takes experience to master. In fact, with the possible exception of the Pen Tool, the Clone Tool could claim to be the most involved tool in your Photoshop app. At first glance, there’s not much to it, but when you delve into the Clone Source Panel, experiment with brush Blending Modes and discover cloning in the Vanishing Point filter, you’ll soon realise there’s much more to the Clone Tool than meets the eye. Barcelona has always been a place of interest for me because of its breathtaking architecture. On a recent trip in September, I paid a visit to the Sagrada Familia and Barcelona Cathedral, and they didn’t disappoint. The Sagrada Familia incorporates both curves and light, giving a jaw-dropping experience as soon as you step foot into it. The many different colours in the vast number of stained-glass windows create a deep glow throughout the whole building. I wanted to capture as many different angles of the Sagrada Familia, to try to demonstrate how the lights moved across the building and how the ceiling stays perfectly white.
