01 LIGHT-PAINT WITH A TORCH While your camera’s sensor stays open for 20-30 seconds during your exposure, try using a torch to paint over objects in the scene, like the tower here. The length of time you need to paint depends on the strength of torch and distance to subject, so trial and error is needed to get it right. 02 PAINT FROM THE SIDE Don’t shine your torch from the camera position, as this leaves the scene looking flat (like the left image). If the head on your tripod comes off, it should rotate off, although some brands require you to loosen grub screws on the underside before you can spin it free. THE EOS R7 and EOS R10 introduced a new way to shoot Raw files: Raw Burst mode. Once this is enabled, you can capture Raw images at up to 30fps, which is faster than the EOS R10 can shoot Raw files natively, but the same speed as the EOS R7 can achieve using its electronic shutter. The Raw images are stored in a single movie file (or roll), which you can navigate to find the frame that you want and then extract that as a Raw file – either in-camera or when using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. The most recent file format to make it on to EOS cameras is HEIF: High Efficiency Image File. You’ll find it as an Image Quality option on more recent EOS R bodies, including the EOS R7, EOS R6 and EOS R5, as well as the EOS-1D X Mark III. HEIF is designed to deliver files that can be compressed more than JPEG while maintaining higher image quality. Canon is using it to produce 10-bit images instead of the 8-bit of JPEGs, which means a bigger colour depth, smoother tonal gradations and more dynamic range. Great results from noisy shots Raising the ISO in low light increases noise, but you can still create incredible images Increasing the ISO is like turning up an amplifier – at the highest levels, you get more noise. However, if you can’t add light, this is the only way to get sharp shots. Using appropriate camera settings and the right processing options in DPP can minimize the noise to give you low-light pictures when youmight normally have put the camera away. Remember that sharp photos with a bit of noise are still usable. When shooting in low light, plan your camera settings to give you the best opportunity for a clean image. The early bird M V VISHY, INDIA, SAYS… I am a long-time Canon user, as I have been using its cameras since I started photography, shooting film. Four years ago, I moved to digital with an EOS 80D, and initially I photographed friends and family. Recently, I bought a Sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens and started to photograph birds, too. One of the joys of a camera like the EOS RP is that it’s wonderfully compact and lightweight for a fullframe body. The same can’t be said of many RF-mount lenses, which put image quality before size and weight considerations. The RF 16mm redresses the balance, with its featherweight 69x40mm, 165g construction. That’s pretty astonishing, given its ultra-wide-angle 16mm focal length and fast f/2.8 aperture. Stepping motor-based autofocus is near-silent and combines rapid performance for stills with smooth transitions for movie capture. Letter of the Month Regarding Richard Pearce’s Letter of the Month (PhotoPlus issue 194), he seems to be of the old school, whereby the skilfulness of the finger on the shutter button on the Box Brownie must account for epic images. He suggests that even the newbie can just pick up a modern Canon EOS mirrorless camera and get these epic images simply by pointing in the right direction. 01 LONG ZOOM To fill the frame with distant animals, you need a long lens – at least 300mm. Monster prime lenses, such as Canon’s 600mm f/4, are preferred by pros. But, for most of us, this is way out of both our price range and baggage allowance. A versatile, quality zoom, such as the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L, is ideal. 02 MEDIUM ZOOM For large animals, a medium zoom is ideal. We used Canon’s 70-200mm just as much as the longer lenses in our bag. A wide maximum aperture of f/2.8 means you can blur out backgrounds – which are frequently cluttered with bushes and trees. Use a tripod THERE ARE times on safari when you can step out of the truck and get set up for a landscape. Here a tripod is essential, especially at the start or end of the day when the light is low. It means you can use slower shutter speeds, which allow for narrow apertures – and thereby greater depth of field – and also means you can use a low ISO for the best image quality. 01 BRING A TRIPOD Tiny vibrations can ruin star sharpness, so it’s vital to have a strong, sturdy tripod. It’s also important to prevent camera-shake by setting mirror lockup or a two-second delay, so that (for DSLRs) the mirror doesn’t cause vibrations. Raw vs JPEG vs HEIF Make the most of your Canon EOS camera’s image quality settings One of the big decisions you need to make when you start shooting is the type of file that you’re going to save your photos in. That’s why Image Quality is the first option in your camera menu. While it has no effect on the composition, it does make a difference to what you can do to your image after you’ve got the shot, how big you can blow your image up (or how much scope there is to crop it), the maximum burst and the number of shots you can save to your memory card. There are three types of file: Raw, JPEG and HEIF, although only a few newer cameras currently offer…

AS MENTIONED above, as well as single files, you’re able to shoot either Raw+JPEG or Raw+HEIF. This can be a benefit if you need to have pictures ready to quickly share, or you just want to see how the camera’s processing settings look in a finished file. If your camera has dual memory card slots, you can configure how the files are saved. The standard option is to have both saved to one card, but with two cards in place, you’re able to specify that the Raw version is saved to one card and the JPEG or HEIF to the other. “When photographing a landscape, what is the best aperture to use for optimum depth of field?”Travis Viceray, Ryton BRIAN SAYS… For large landscapes, the appropriate aperture depends on how much depth of field you want in your photo. Typically, you would want to maximize the depth of field, but this doesn’t mean automatically selecting f/16 or f/22 and crossing your fingers. With extreme narrow apertures, image sharpness reduces due to diffraction losses, and your shutter speed needs to be slower to balance the exposure. It is more effective to focus your lens at the optimum subject distance where depth of field is maximized for the selected aperture – this is known as the hyperfocal distance. You can expect some barrel distortion with ultra-wide lenses, but it tends to become less with zoom lenses as you extend through the zoom range. This chart shows the relative amounts of distortion for primes and zooms at their shortest focal length. In the APS-C camp, the budget-friendly Canon 10-18mm and pricier Tokina do well to minimize distortion, but the Tokina has a less generous viewing angle. In the full-frame group, the Canon RF 16mm relies heavily on automatic in-camera correction. MIRRORLESS CAMERAS What to look for Canon EOS mirrorless cameras Canon’s full-frame EOS R cameras are packed with the latest tech including IBIS, Animal AF tracking and 20fps via the electronic shutter in both the EOS R5 and R6. Use Auto ISO WE PREFER to use Manual mode in combination with Auto ISO for wildlife photography. This way, you can ensure the shutter speed stays fast enough, while at the same time choosing an aperture that suits your depth-of-field requirements. Your camera then varies the ISO accordingly for a correct exposure. In low light, the ISO may be pushed to the limit, but it’s better to have a slightly noisy image than one ruined by camera shake. 01 LOAD UP YOUR IMAGE Drag the Mono FX Kit folder from the download to your computer. In Photoshop CC, open the image you want to convert to black and white. Raw files are more versatile than the other file types, as they enable you to alter many of the image processing settings after you’ve taken a picture. While you can’t adjust the three exposure settings – aperture, shutter speed and ISO – or fundamentally change where the lens was focused (although you can tweak the sharpness in some cases), you can apply exposure compensation, fine-tune the white balance, change the Picture Style and more. You can then save your changes as a new file, all without affecting the original picture. In addition to enabling you to shoot standard Raw files, some cameras also have a Dual Pixel Raw option. Your camera might offer a number of creative shooting modes, such as multiple exposure, HDR and focus bracketing, but in many cases these are only compatible with JPEGs or let you save a final JPEG image to the memory card. In some cases, however, more advanced EOS bodies give you more freedom. For instance, when you activate multiple exposure shooting on the EOS 5D Mark IV, your final image is saved as a Raw file. You’re also given the option of saving the source images that you shot for the multiple exposure – again, each as an individual Raw file. Activate the same function on the EOS R10, however, and the final image is saved as a large, highquality JPEG, even if you’ve set Raw as the picture quality. You…

WHEN YOU change image quality, keep an eye on the number of shots that can be taken. If you’re running low on card space, switching from Raw to Large, Fine JPEG, say, can make a big difference. Colour fringing from lateral chromatic aberration can be annoying in landscape shots. Caused by different wavelengths of light being focused at different points across a plane perpendicular to the path of light through a lens, it’s most noticeable around high-contrast edges of objects near edges and corners. The Canon EF-S 10-18mm, RF 15-35mm, Sigma 12-24mm and Tokina are the worst offenders here but produce fairly minimal colour fringing.…

Choosing lenses Key factors to watch out for THE MAIN factors to consider in a lens are its focal length, maximum aperture, and if it’s full-frame compatible or not. We’ve categorized lenses by focal length range from wide-angle to telephoto. The larger a lens’s maximum aperture, the ‘faster’ it is. Zooms are more flexible than primes, but tend not to have such fast maximum apertures. Full-frame lenses will also work with ‘crop-sensor’ EOS DSLRs, but crop-sensor lenses aren’t compatible with full-frame cameras. For Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras the dedicated Canon RF lenses are best, but using Canon’s Mount Adapter EF-EOS R enables EF-S and EF lenses to be used on EOS R cameras.
