In this photo project we capture a portrait in the same style as the famous image from 1963 of Christine Keeler as she posed naked while astride a chair. It was shot by Lewis Morley in less than five minutes, during a nude publicity shoot. The most well-known photo was the one that appeared in the Sunday Mirror. It was also the last shot on a 12-exposure film. It was taken at the peak of public attention during the relationship between teenage Keeler and the married secretary of state for war, John Profumo. ‘The Profumo Affair’ inspired many films and a recent BBC TV six-part series. Editing your pictures in programs like Adobe Photoshop CC, or even the more budgetfriendly Photoshop Elements as we’re using here, doesn’t have to be about creating the most accurate or sharp images. Sometimes it can just be a playground where we can have fun and learn some new editing tricks along the way. Today, we’ll combine a bit of both by incorporating ink splat start images into your own photographs to create some striking graphic art. In-camera multiple exposures Make the most of this creative function available on most recent Canon cameras While it’s easy to dismiss in-camera multiple exposures as just a simple gimmick, it’s a creative tool that shouldn’t be overlooked. The multiple exposure settings are accessed via the red Shooting menu, or by pressing the Creative Photo button that’s available on some bodies. Once activated, you can record two to nine exposures which are then merged into one image. You’re free to move the camera between each exposure, allowing you to blend completely different subjects within the same frame – mixing pictures of flowers, trees and other natural textures with the human form is a popular multiple exposure technique, for example. Canon has unleashed two very similar yet distinct beasts, which have turned the industry on its head. Last issue we tested the Canon EOS R5, a mirrorless answer to the EOS 5D (and, according to reports, the closest we’ll ever get to a 5D Mark V) that packs overwhelming 45Mp and 8K firepower. Vintage portraits might look old, but they never look dated. Long after Instagram filters have faded into obscurity, there will still be an appetite for that vintage look. I’m going to show you how to convert your images into convincing old film portraits. You’ll also see how to create a DIY vintage texture using little more than a piece of paper and a few tea bags. But if you don’t have the time to be dousing paper in tea, you can recreate our image with our free texture images (see web link at the bottom of page 46). Most of us will normally work on our Photoshop images in the RGB colour mode. In this mode, each pixel is given a certain value for red, green and blue. These combine to create millions of colours. As such, RGB mode is the principal mode for most edits. But it does drawbacks… In RGB mode the colour and brightness of your image is tied into one. Adjust the red, green or blue value of any pixel and, as well as changing the colour, you’ll also affect brightness. This is where LAB mode comes in. Like RGB, LAB is also an acronym. It stands for Lightness, A and B channels. These represent an entirely different set of values for each pixel. The Lightness values determine how bright the pixels are, while…

“Am I doubling up on disk usage by having DPP3 and DPP4 access my Raw photos? They seem to make different edits of each photograph.”Roy Parker, Gosport BRIAN SAYS… Actually you are not doubling the disk space used, unless you export a final processed file from Digital Photo Professional (DPP) v3 and Digital Photo Professional v4. When you edit an image with DPP, the changes you make are stored in a recipe container within the image file itself. There are separate containers for DPP v3 and DPP v4 recipes. DPP v4 does not read the DPP v3 recipe and vice versa. You can prove this by making a monochrome version in one version and colour in the other version. DSLR CAMERAS What to look for Canon EOS cameras Canon splits its EOS DSLR lineup into entry-level, enthusiast and professional ranges; the 4000D is the most basic, the 800D and 77D for intermediates, the 80D and full-frame 6D Mk II for more advanced enthusiasts, while the 7D, full-frame 5D and 1D lines have pro-level features. By using a combo of layer skills and effects in Affinity Photo we can transform our portrait into a series of abstract swirls, building up the effect with more layers. Canon is the pioneer of the Image Stabilizer, and for many years their approach has been to stabilize lenses, so called optical image stabilization (IS). This was essential for film cameras, but with the combination of digital sensors and an electronic viewfinder stabilization in the camera body has been enabled by moving the image sensor. The EOS R5 and R6 mirrorless cameras are the first Canon interchangeable lens cameras with in-body stabilization, but how does it work and how good is it? In-lens optical stabilization is ace to use with longer focal length lenses, the stabilizer element being suited to the focal length.
