The semi-auto modes Many amateurs rely on the semi-auto modes, Aperture Priority (Av) and Shutter Priority (Tv). With Av, you select the aperture and the camera sets an appropriate shutter speed for a correct exposure. In Tv, you set the shutter speed, while the camera chooses an aperture. These modes give you limited control, but if you want to take full control of your results then step up to Manual. Even the most advanced digital cameras on the market will struggle to handle the exposure between a bright sky and the foreground, as they have to meter to expose for one or the other. This often leads to sky details being blown out and lost, but fear not, you can replace the sky in Photoshop to save it! 01 SELECT THE FOREGROUND Open a landscape, duplicate the background twice with Cmd/Ctrl+J. Hide the lower two layers. Go to Select> Select and Mask. Use the Quick Selection brush to paint the foreground. Increase Radius to 10px to improve the selection. Every EOS camera apart from the 400D, 2000D and 1300D feature four metering modes: Evaluative, Centre-weighted average, Partial and Spot. The most sophisticated of these is Evaluative. It divides the viewfinder into a number of zones – from 63 zones in the EOS 400D to 384 zones in the EOS R5 – then compares the readings from each zone before calculating the exposure. The subject of the shot doesn’t need to be bang in the centre of the frame when you use Evaluative. This is because the camera uses the AF points to determine where the subject is – it presumes that it’s under the AF point that’s achieved focus – and it priorities the exposure accordingly. Evaluative metering with exposure comp can be a quick way of working, but it takes time to be able to judge when it’s required and how much you need. A shift in the way you’ve framed a shot, or where you focus, can make a big difference to the exposure too – not always in a good way. By switching to Partial or Spot metering you can take an exposure reading from a much smaller part of the image, and lock that setting in using your camera’s Autoexposure Lock button (look for the one marked ‘*”). Just try to remember all that mid-tone malarky. If the subject you take a meter reading from is mid-tone, there’s no problem. If it isn’t, try metering from a mid-tone in the same light…

Canon’s EOS system launched in 1987 with the introduction of the EF lens mount. EF (electro focus) swapped mechanical links for a series of electrical contacts to transfer info between camera and lens. EF lenses ushered in a new era of fast accurate AF. EF lenses and mounts have a red circle to ensure you can align the lens and body. Macro and tilt-shift lenses without AF, use the designations MP-E and TS-E, but fit EF mount cameras. With the advent of DSLRs and smaller APS-C size sensors there was a need for shorter focal length standard zoom lenses. YEMI’S COMMENT I was getting into the swing of shooting tethered and remotely and found it quite useful to count down from 3, 2, 1, before firing the shutter, as there was a bit of a delay in the connection. This made sure Natasha knew when to hold the pose, so I would catch the right moment without her blinking. For this image Natasha suggested going for a wider mid-length portrait, so I asked her to move the camera away from her a bit to include more of her body. 01 STEADY AS SHE GOES You’ll need your camera on a tripod for sharp shots, plus it makes it easier to blend your Raw exposures seamlessly for the single HDR Raw photo. Then, go back to File>Open, this time navigating to the folder of free sky images from the Resources folder (see link bottom left). Whether you want to change a person’s clothes or alter the colour of any object, the process is very simple in Affinity Photo. We simply define the area to be altered, then use Layers and Masks to change it. The first step is to isolate the area with a selection. Affinity offers several excellent selection tools that lock on to complex shapes and objects. In this project we’ll use the Selection Brush and Refine command – a combination that lets us make quick, precise selections with ease. Once done, we can go on to add an Adjustment Layer. I live in South Africa where young black people are excluded from Kruger National Park and other local reserves for several reasons, the expensive costs of access being the main one. This means that local communities generally aren’t aware of career opportunities in conservation and wildlife tourism. Wildlife makes up around 10 per cent of South Africa’s GDP. Our main goal at Wild Shots Outreach is to introduce local young black people to the wildlife right on their doorstep. By providing access, training and photography equipment, we want to help the participants appreciate the beauty and value of their natural heritage. Rather than being a selective adjustment, exposure compensation affects the entire image. So, if you increase the exposure to lighten the shadows in a picture then you’ll brighten pale areas of a shot too – and there’s a risk that you may overexpose, turning them pure white and featureless. While it’s fine to ‘blow out’ highlights on shiny objects, you’ll likely want to retain some detail in other areas. You may have heard photographers talk about ‘exposing for the highlights’; this means adjusting the exposure to ensure the highlights aren’t overexposed. This may result in dark areas becoming black and featureless, but it’s usually more preferable than burnt-out whites. To keep track of how your exposure adjustments are affecting the image, check the histogram. If the histogram shape is being…

EOS MIRRORLESS cameras enable you to compensate the metered reading up to plus or minus thee stops in 1/3-stop increments, but an EOS DSLR enables you to comp up to five stops. But the readout in the viewfinder will only show up to +/- 2 or +/-3 stops. If you want to set exposure comp beyond here you’ll need to use the Quick Control screen or dip into the Expo.comp/AEB menu (found in the camera’s red Shooting menu). You can even go beyond a camera’s comp range by activating Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB). Controlling exposures When you’re exposing for a particular scene, you’re actually carrying out a balancing act. The aim is to get just the right amount of light coming through the lens to hit the camera’s sensor, by adjusting three core variables: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you’ve only ever used Auto and semi-automatic modes before, you might not have noticed that when you change a setting, the camera is actually automatically changing the other variables to create a balanced shot. Close the aperture and the camera will need to extend the shutter speed to let in more light, or boost the ISO to make the sensor more sensitive to light, to ensure a good exposure. 01 DECENT DISPLAYS A well-calibrated monitor will help you no end when it comes to matching what you see on screen and what comes out of the printer. Mist can greatly enhance the atmosphere in a landscape, but more often than not when we reach a stunning spot we’re met with bright sunshine instead. But, if you like you can alter the atmosphere later on using this simple Photoshop technique. Of course, it’s not the same as capturing a misty scene in the flesh, but it’s a striking mood-changer and also introduces several key Photoshop tools. Using simple layer tricks and brushes, we’ll transform a scene bathed in sunlight to one shrouded in atmospheric mist. Along the way we’ll learn key Photoshop skills, from isolating parts of an image with selections, to using creative brush tips. 01 MAKE A SELECTION Grab the Selection Brush tool and make sure ‘Snap to Edges’ is checked in the tool options. Paint over the clothes to select the area. If you select the wrong bit, hold Alt and paint to subtract. Next, click the Refine button. Increase Border Width to 5px and hit OK. 02 ALTER THE HUE When happy with the selection, click the Adjustments icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and click HSL. In this edition of Digital EOS Essentials we explain all you need to know to capture more consistent exposures Trying to achieve a good exposure with a digital camera is world away from the occasional finger-crossing that came with shooting film. Being able to preview the results on the rear screen and check the brightness range with the histogram means that you know exactly what you’re getting straight out of the camera, and can make any exposure adjustment to ensure you get good results. Landscapes THERE’S OFTEN little latitude for exposure adjustment when shooting a landscape, and you might be unable to find a single exposure that can record detail in both the sky and the foreground. One solution is to use a graduated filter to darken the top of the picture, then bring it closer to the exposure value for the bottom. Alternatively, shoot three (or more) images from the same position, adjusting the exposure each time to record a full range of detail of the scene, and then blend the best bits of each image together in Photoshop (more on this on page 40). "Can I use a Canon Extender with my EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens? Robert Thomson, Warsop" BRIAN SAYS… The only extenders for EF lenses that Canon makes are the Extender EF 1.4x and Extender EF 2x, the current ones being the Mark III. All have a protruding front that fits in to a recess in the back of the lens, but only a few lenses have a recessed back element that fits, generally the L-series lenses with a focal length of at least 70mm. Your EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens is, unfortunately not compatible with the Canon Extenders. Grubs up JEFF GUILE, NORTH WALES SAYS… Lockdown meant the end of landscape photography for a while. So, I decided to photograph wildlife in my backyard by training my lens on the bird feeder on the shed. I spent a few days watching the birds: seeing how they reacted, working out the best angle to capture them as they came to feed. I wanted to blur out the pebble dashed wall behind. It was a pleasant day in the deck chair, using the remote shutter to capture my shots. I’m pleased with my efforts and will look at more wildlife photography after this. WHILE THE limitations on recording video certainly mean that you can’t shoot as freely as you would like, due to overheating issues as discussed above, the video capabilities of the Canon EOS R5 really are remarkable. If you only film occasionally, or you only shoot in 4K 30p, you’ll have no problem, but if you shoot 4K 60p or above then you’ll need to tread carefully. With more expensive models, expect greater handling, more robust build quality (weather-sealing and magnesium-alloy shells), more advanced features, and full-frame rather than APS-C image sensors.
