We photographers are fascinated by the coast. Perhaps it’s because, as an island nation, we are naturally drawn to the sea, or perhaps it’s because, with different tides and weather, coastal locations look different every time you visit them. There is also a huge variety of subject matter: cliff-top views, sandy beaches, rocky coves and coastal architecture, such as lighthouses, piers and groynes. The coast is beautiful and dramatic, but conveying that sense of beauty and drama isn’t always straightforward. It can be a harsh environment, which has implications for protecting both yourself and your Canon kit. There are technical challenges, too – seascapes are often very contrasty, containing an incredibly wide tonal range from deep shadows to bright highlights, which can cause real problems with exposure.
