Raw files are often described as ‘digital negatives’ because they contain the information captured by the camera before it’s been processed into a JPEG. Each camera manufacturer uses its own Raw file format, and with Canon it’s either the CR2 format (existing DSLRs), or a newer CR3 format introduced with the EOS M50 and EOS R mirrorless cameras. This offers an additional ‘C-Raw’ lossy compression format for smaller files. It’s like the difference between a film negative and a print you get back from a lab. With Raw, or CR2/3 files you can access the full range of tones, all the colours and all the digital data captured before it’s been ‘processed’. JPEGs are fine for instant shareable pictures – and with undemanding scenes they can be decent – but…

I have 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lenses, what standard zoom lens would cover the 35-70mm range with my EOS 5D Mark IV? There are some amazing full-frame cameras in Canon’s current line-up, most of which we featured in last month’s Super Test. But bigger isn’t always better… APS-C format DSLRs are based on a smaller image sensor, measuring about 22x15mm, almost the same size as a stamp. That’s quite a downsize from the 36x24mm of a full-frame sensor, which enables the physical build of APS-C cameras to be smaller – all but two of Canon’s current APS-C DSLRs are lighter than the new EOS R mirrorless! The 1.6x crop factor plays into your hands for telephoto shooting, extending your reach and again saving size and weight. For example, Canon’s highperformance EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens, with it’s excellent image quality and super-fast autofocus system, has a length of just 146mm…

Despite having an almost identical set of features and specifications as the 800D, Canon classes the 77D as a DSLR for ‘enthusiasts’. The list of headline attractions held in common include a 24.2Mp Dual Pixel CMOS image sensor, lategeneration DIGIC 7 image processor, the same 45-point autofocus and RGB+IR metering systems, pentaprism viewfinder, sensitivity range, maximum burst rate, 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen, Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth connectivity, and more. You’re not really asking your Canon to do anything different when you shoot a Raw file because creating Raw data is part of its processing anyway. All you’re doing is asking it to save this Raw data as a file you can process yourself, rather than leaving the camera to process it internally. In effect, the camera is just like any Raw processing software you might use. The difference is that the camera’s processing options are locked in by the camera settings you choose, whereas if you save a Raw file you can choose these settings yourself later. This is critical, because the processing used to create an in-camera JPEG means removing lots of the data initially shot. With a Raw file you still have all that original image data…

Processing your Canon Raw files isn’t the end, of course, because you’ll want to share, print, edit or publish your results. This is where Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom and Digital Photo Professional start to differ… Adobe Camera Raw is designed to either send a processed image to Photoshop for further editing or save a processed picture as a new file. As we’ve seen, Adobe Camera Raw’s editing tools are so powerful that you might have already done all the enhancement work you need to. If so, you can simply hit the ‘Save’ button to generate a processed image – but you do need to make sure the settings are correct for the use the picture is designed for. You will need some device on the camera to control any Speedlites that are not directly connected. Many of the APS-C cameras can use the built-in flash to control remote flashes using the optical wireless system. The pop-up flash sends commands to the remote flashes, but doesn’t have to be used as part of the picture. Or, you’ll need a Speedlite trigger in the form of a Speedlite 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II, 600EX-RT or 600EX II-RT to optically trigger remote flashes. Canon recently launched two beginner-friendly DSLRs, in the shape of the 4000D/Rebel T100 and 2000D/Rebel T7. The former is the outright cheapest DSLR on the planet but leaves a little to be desired in terms of features and build. For example, it has no dioptre adjustment for the viewfinder, a plastic rather than metal lens mount ring, an 18Mp image sensor with a below-average megapixel count, and a relatively small, low resolution rear screen. Its kit lens is also a very basic affair that lacks image stabilization. Spend a bit more on the 2000D, and all of these issues are addressed. Better build quality includes a metal lens mount, a dioptre adjustment for the viewfinder, a 24.1Mp sensor, and a three-inch 920k rear screen. The kit lens is a humble…

The 80D feels more of a heavyweight contender than the 77D, tipping the scales at 730g compared with 540g for bodyweight without an attached lens. It’s a bigger camera that feels more substantial in the hand, with a more natural, assured grip and a better balance when fitted with chunky, enthusiastgrade lenses. It has an up-market pentaprism viewfinder, delivering a bigger viewing image than the pentamirror finders of the 2000D, 800D and 77D, as well as giving full 100 per cent frame coverage. To Affinity and beyond! I have recently taken up photography after a long break (30 years) and have got my first DSLR, an EOS 650D secondhand, up until then I had just used a compact for snaps. There’s no real difference between shooting JPEGs and Raw files – all that’s happening is that you’re saving the image at an earlier stage in the digital process. But there are a few things you need to be aware of and to take into account when shooting Raw One of the advantages of Raw is that it lets you save some of your digital decisions for later, like the white balance setting or the ‘Picture Style’ you want. But, there are advantages to getting this right in-camera – it can save you time and effort and possibly get you better results. One of the most magical things about Photoshop is the ability it gives you to transport your subject to a different place – or in this case, a different scale. With a few simple skills you can create all kinds of fantastical composites. But it’s not just about image-editing wizardry. Much of the hard work in this project is done in-camera, and it’s here that the effect comes to life. One of the things that makes a bad composite stand out is the mis-match of lighting or perspective – two things that have nothing to do with Photoshop. Reinforcing its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality lenses that can rival own-brand optics, Tamron launched its 15-30mm wide-angle zoom four years ago. More recently, we’ve seen some highly impressive ‘G2’ (second-generation) lenses that ramp up build quality, handling and performance. Now the 15-30mm lens gets a G2 makeover… The original Tamron 15-30mm lens grabbed the headlines with its combination of a fast and constant f/2.8 aperture rating, along with a built-in optical stabilizer. The latter was courtesy of Tamron’s proprietary and highly effective VC (Vibration Compensation) system. The G2 lens sticks to the same formula, but the new edition has an uprated 4.5-stop stabilizer, which is no mean feat for such a wide-angle lens. Sitting at the top of Canon’s ‘beginner’ range of DSLRs, the EOS 800D/Rebel T7i is a year older than the EOS 4000D/Rebel T7 but has a lot more to offer. For starters, it has a Dual Pixel CMOS image sensor, as fitted to all of the cameras on test, apart from the 2000D. This enables vastly quicker and more effective autofocus performance in live view and movie capture modes, with much less hunting back and forth. It’s thanks to the image sensor featuring dual-pixel phasedetection sites across its surface, rather than just relying on contrastdetection for autofocus. In regular viewfinder-based stills shooting mode, autofocus is again far superior, thanks to a 45-point AF system in which all of the points are cross-type. Built as an APS-C format digital camera to suit professional photographers, the original 7D was launched back in 2009 and wasn’t updated until 2014. The Mark II has also now been on sale for nearly five years, but still looks fresh and bang up-to-date. It has solid, weathersealed build quality, with a tough magnesium alloy construction and a control interface that’s similar to the 5D range of full-frame cameras.
