Australia is renowned for its beaches and vast arid deserts. However, tucked away in the Southern Corner of New South Wales is the Kosciuszko National Park. This 6900 square kilometre park is home to some stunning alpine landscapes, Mount Kosciuszko (Australia’s tallest mountain, standing at 2228m) as well as a number of ski resorts. “Is it possible to use two Speedlites at the same time, on my Canon EOS 7D Mk II, for some extra power?”Ronnie Buis, South Africa BRIAN SAYS… Yes it is possible, and there are a few ways to achieve it. Since you can use one flash on the hotshoe, all that would be needed is a suitable bracket to mount the second flash near the lens. I used a Canon Speedlite bracket SB-E2, but there are plenty of alternatives. With radio wireless flashes, use the one on the hotshoe as a master, and the other as a slave in group A. Canon master flashes are always in group A. If you don’t have radio flashes, it may be possible to use the built-in flash as a Speedlite transmitter to trigger…

Bigger and better, full-frame image sensors have significant advantages over their smaller APS-C format siblings. With more than two and a half times the surface area, there’s the option of adding more megapixels for capturing greater levels of fine detail and texture in photos. Alternatively, a modest megapixel count enables physically larger photosites, equating to pixels within images. This gives the potential for a dramatic reduction in image noise, when shooting under low-lighting conditions at high ISO settings. Whereas Canon’s APS-C format cameras have a crop factor of 1.6x, there’s no crop factor when using a full-frame camera. As depth of field is more closely linked to the ‘actual’ rather than ‘effective’ focal length, you can get a tighter depth of field with a full-frame camera. It’s ideal for blurring…

The 5DS and 5DS R are mostly based on the retired 5D Mark III, but with one major exception. Whereas the Mark III had a modest megapixel count, the ‘S’ versions really pushes the envelope with 50.6MP image sensors. That’s 2.5x the resolving power of even the mighty 1D X Mark II. The only real difference between the 5DS and 5DS R is that the ‘R’ edition has no anti-alias correction in the low-pass filter that sits in front of the image sensor. This gives the potential of a further increase in the capture of incredibly fine detail, but with a greater risk of moire patterning and false colour. Launched back in 2012, the original EOS 6D brought full-frame photography to the masses. It delivered excellent image quality but some of its specifications left a lot to be desired. The Mark II bumps up the megapixel count by 30 per cent and has a vastly improved 45-point rather than 11-point autofocus system, in which all of the points are cross-type rather than just the central one. Also, nine of these points can be used at f/8, compared with none in the original camera. Autofocus is much better for live view and movie capture, thanks to phase-detection Dual Pixel AF technology on the upgraded sensor, as in all of the other cameras in this group apart from the 5DS and 5DS R. By the latest standards, the 5D Mark IV’s 30.4MP image sensor looks pretty average in terms of megapixel count. Indeed, it’s not much higher in resolution than the 6D Mark II, and falls a long way short of the 5DS and 5DS R. That suits the majority of enthusiast and professional photographers just fine. It’s arguably a perfect compromise that enables excellent detail along with clean high-ISO images and a nippy max drive rate. The Mark IV boasts a Dual Pixel AF image sensor that enables fast and accurate phase-shift autofocus in live view and movie capture modes, coupled with a new DIGIC 6+ image processor. Long live print! I’ve been a PhotoPlus subscriber for four years now, and really enjoy all the Canon techniques, especially the photo projects that give me inspiration! On occasion our images are underexposed, or perhaps they’re overly bright. And the same can be true for our cropping and composition – sometimes it’s just a little bit off. Shooting digitally has an advantage, since you can crop an image after you’ve taken it. However, you should be aware that cropping into your images removes pixels – and thus reduces the size at which you can view and print your photos, because of the lower resolution. In December 2017, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and my world was turned upside-down. I will never forget the words, “You almost certainly have cancer,” and the frenzy of tests that followed. I imagined months of feeling ill and not being able to do anything, and I was so scared of losing my creativity as an artist and photographer. Due to intensive surgery and treatment, I had to temporarily suspend my portraiture business, but I found it very therapeutic taking self-portraits depicting the emotions and side effects I was experiencing. I then included other people and Faces of Cancer was born. I wanted to break stereotypical opinions about people with cancer and show people the spectrum of emotions that could be experienced. I am going to start with my view that, in most cases, a noisy image with a sharp subject is better than a blurry one with less noise. I will happily raise the ISO on my camera to ensure I get a sharp result, but I meet so many photographers who seem to worry whenever they need to use ISO800 or more. Digital noise is more prevalent in darker parts of the image, as it’s these parts that have minimal light levels in the pixels, so to increase the sensitivity the noise gets amplified. Brighter parts of the same shot at the same ISO show less noise, as the signal to noise ratio is better. Of course more modern Canon cameras are improved from older ones. Over time the camera…

Price-wise, the EOS R is pitched between the 6D Mark II and 5D Mark IV. It has a practically identical megapixel count as the latter, and has a newer-generation image processor than both. As Canon’s first mirrorless full-frame camera, it’s like a grown-up version of EOS M models, and features a completely new lens ‘RF’ lens mount. Of course, the supporting cast of new lenses is currently a bit thin but, crucially, the camera is typically sold complete with an EF adapter. This enables you to use both EF and EF-S (APS-format) SLR lenses from your existing collection of Canon glass.
