In this masterclass, I’m going to look at ways to add atmosphere into landscapes by using natural elements and weather occurrences to create dramatic images. Let’s get started. CAMERA GEAR Alongside your camera, landscape photographers need a wide-angle lens above everything else, as most landscape images require wider angles to include all the elements in a scene. However, a telephoto lens can also be a useful addition to your kit bag as it allows you to photograph details in a scene if needed. Have you ever noticed that most times the word “drone” is used, it’s in a negative context? In The Simpsons, Mr. Smithers disparagingly refers to the lunkhead Homer Simpson as “one of the drones from Sector 7G.” We also use “drone” to describe monotonous, endless talking. For example, if someone I’m talking with keeps droning on about sports, I start making a beeline towards another conversation. And speaking of beelines, even our apiary friends are maligned by the word “drone,” as it’s what we call the nondescript worker bees that do all the grunt work to maintain a functioning hive in service of a queen bee that couldn’t care less about them.
