Your editor has reached an age where from time to time he feels compelled to bring some order to the junk accumulation zone that passes for his garage. It was during one such bout of neatness-committing, that I came across a dusty old box labelled cryptically “Darkroom junk”. Inside, along with half a dozen 4x5 negative hangers, a film reel or two, and the light source from a long departed enlarger, I found a tattered A4 envelope containing a single, thick piece of black card stock. AI (artificial intelligence) has been in the news this year, mainly focusing on text generation, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT taking centre stage. A sign of its importance to photography came when German photographer Boris Eldagsen’s image “The Electrician” was nominated as the winning entry in the “Creative” section of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards. While this image (reproduced here) might look like a photograph at first glance, it was created with AI software. Eldagsen says he submitted the image to bring the issue of AI image generation to public attention. Eldagsen’s entry was disqualified once the organisers realised the extent of the manipulation. I have also experimented with a product light box, which makes it easier to produce a black background. Each year my fascination urges me to have another crack. There is a sensuality in shape, colour, and texture to the picture which I find impactful, and always raises comment! In this instance, the image waivers, for me, as an illusion between a young cygnet and a budding cyclamen… both emerging into beautiful adults. What do you see?
