A polyglot who speaks 22 languages, an ophthalmologist, a novelist, playwright, painter, sculptor, journalist, a patriot, etc etc—Philippine national hero José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda or simply, José Rizal, is undeniably a jack of all trades, and a master of all. Born to an affluent family, Rizal went to prestigious schools in the country and abroad, and later became a proponent of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the Philippines during the Spanish colonial times. In 1982, he was exiled to Dapitan in Mindanao, perceived as the leader of a brewing revolution. He was executed on December 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan, now the Luneta.
