Sometimes, the best ideas come out of brainstorming about something else entirely. Such was the case when we conceived our inaugural reader-guided Dining Awards. During a collaborative project session with our broadcast partner, CBS12, publisher Terry Duffy and I batted ideas around with station general manager Mike Pumo and executive news director Adam Henning. The conversation initially focused on shopping and, as great exchanges often do, somehow came around to food, particularly all the fabulous new restaurants popping up in the Palm Beaches. One idea begot another, and before we knew it, we had hatched the inaugural PBI-CBS12 Dining Awards—all in about 10 minutes. If you’ve seen Charles Todd around Palm Beach but can’t quite place his face, that suits the award-winning author just fine. “Most people can’t remember the photo on the back of a book,” says Todd, who resides in North Palm Beach. “I enjoy my anonymity.” But Todd isn’t the only one on those back covers; he happily splits that space with his mother, Caroline Todd, of Greenville, Delaware.
