An expertly curated, luxuriously produced compendium of all things Palm Beach, Palm Beach Illustrated brings to life personalities and takes you inside the exclusive homes, parties and interests of the world’s most affluent and influential people.
Though snow flurries aren’t falling outside and chestnuts aren’t roasting on an open fire, there is magic in the air in Palm Beach. It’s heard in the clinking of crystal as we celebrate our gratitude for friends, family, and good fortune, and felt in the warmth of the true spirit of giving. In this most social and philanthropic of communities, the holiday season is about sharing and counting blessings. This month is the perfect time to engage in festive activities, such as taking the children to see The Nutcracker (Ballet Palm Beach performs a charming version December 1-3 at the Kravis) or to the annual Christmas carol sing-along at Bethesda by the Sea. But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to give back—and to teach the next generation the joys of…

When does hoarding turn into a creatively fulfilling pursuit? Local artist Bruce Helander reflects upon this question while simultaneously highlighting the life and belongings of his friend and famous glass sculptor Dale Chihuly in the new book Chihuly: An Artist Collects (Abrams Books, $35). In his perspicacious foreword, Helander chronicles Chihuly’s evolution as a collector, noting his appreciation for the beauty of everyday objects and fascination with the aesthetics of repetition. Helander believes Chihuly’s itch for flea market excursions and adoration of domestic hunting can be traced back to his mother—but this passion did not end in childhood. Rather, as Chihuly grew as an artist, he also dedicated decades to cultivating hundreds of items, from ornaments to dog figurines, matchbooks to accordions. On December 18, Helander will host a lecture…
The Moke has a storied history. Produced for the British Army in the 1950s as a combat vehicle, it was quickly deemed unfit for service and instead found favor as a spunky, short-distance cart. Celebrity fans included Brigitte Bardot and The Beach Boys, who helped it gain a repu - tation tied to breezy island living. Now, the Moke—which rhymes with bloke—has found its way stateside with a carbon-free electric version suitable for real road travel. Its lithium battery can charge in eight hours and hooks up to any three-pronged plug. While this glamorous motorcar puts golf carts to shame, it still tops out at 25 mph, making it less than ideal for rush hour on I-95 but perfect for scooting around Palm Beach. Drivers in waiting can purchase it…
