Swirling Vortex By David Swindler “Lake Powell has been a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts for decades with its vibrant blue water juxtaposed against flaming red cliffs, monoliths and swirling sandstone. In fact, I would say it is a quintessential view of the great American Southwest. “This particular evening, we hiked up some steep sandstone inclines to reach this ridge. It was very windy, and we ended up having an incredible sunset at last light. However, I liked this shot the best, taken just before the light disappeared as it illuminated the interesting vortex and the background cliffs. Nikon’s expanding lens collection for its mirrorless Z system now includes two macro options, the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S and the NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8. The 50mm is light and compact, can focus as close as 0.53 feet, and, with its wider focal length, is a great option as an everyday lens with macro capabilities. The NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is the system’s pro telephoto macro, larger and heavier but with the longer focal length that many macro pros prefer because it allows you to shoot at a greater distance from your subject. Location Lake Moultrie is South Carolina’s third-largest lake and was created in the 1940s. It’s fed by its larger neighbor, Lake Marion. Lake Moultrie has shallow swamps, black water ponds and in some areas is still dotted with bald cypress trees, making it a great location for nature and landscape photographers. Most photographers who visit the area will want to use Charleston as their base camp of discovery. Charleston has many affordable hotels and restaurants and some of the best photography spots along the South Carolina coast, including Magnolia Plantation, Folly Beach and Botany Bay, to name just a few. Forest Defender “This is the first macro shot that I was really happy with,” photographer Mattias Hammar of Gothenburg, Sweden, confides. “A blue damselfly defending the forest. The photo was taken beside a forest path close to a lake. When I passed, I saw 20 to 30 damsels buzzing in an area covered in tall green grass. I spent an hour failing to get a nice shot of these evasive models before this moment happened. I started to close in on this fellow who didn’t back down. OM SYSTEM DEBUTS OM-1 FLAGSHIP OM Digital Solutions, formerly known as Olympus, has introduced its first camera under the new OM SYSTEM brand. Though the Olympus name remains on the OM-1, the company states that this is a nod to the company’s history and that future OM SYSTEM cameras will not include Olympus branding. The OM-1 is an advancement of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 series cameras, similar to the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X in design but with enhanced capabilities. The 20-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor is a new Stacked BSI (backside-illuminated) type and is paired with the latest TruePix X image processor that’s three times faster than its predecessor. In photography, the term macro is defined as a “life-size, 1x, 1:1 or larger” rendering of a subject on film or sensor. Any magnification less than 1:1 is considered “close-up” photography. A 100mm macro lens that captures images at 1x without accessories has been available to Canon users since 1979, beginning with the Macro FD 100mm f/4. A faster ƒ/2.8 upgrade designed for the EF mount came in 1990, a version with the ultrasonic motor (USM) was released in 2000, and image stabilization was added in 2009 with the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is a roadless, 220-square-mile expanse of glacially carved valleys, towering sea cliffs, wildflower meadows, legions of seabirds—and Iceland’s only native terrestrial mammal, the arctic fox. With its rounded ears, thick fur and shortened legs and snout, the arctic fox is supremely adapted to an unforgiving climate. Iceland’s fox population is split between white and blue color morphs. The white morph is completely white through the winter and mixed brown and white in the summer, while the blue morph remains a bluish brown throughout the year. Since the island’s settlement over a thousand years ago, Icelanders have hunted this small (less than 10 pounds) carnivore, at first for its fur and later to protect lambs and other livestock.
