When I’m helping a student set up a shot, I always ask three questions: “Have you refined your composition?” “What is your exposure strategy?” And, most importantly of all, “How could you make the best possible photograph of your subject?” With that third question, I’m not asking what more the student could do at that moment. NIKON Z 5, NEW LENS & TELECONVERTERS Nikon introduced the Z 5, an attractively priced ($1,399, body only) full frame mirrorless camera, along with a compact zoom lens and two teleconverters for the Z system. The 24.3-megapixel Nikon Z 5 is similar in form and size to the Z 6 and Z 7, with the main physical difference being the omission of a top-panel LCD information display, replaced by the exposure mode dial. One of the key performance differences between the Z 5 and the Z 6 and Z 7 is the continuous shooting speed, which on the Z 5 maxes out at 4.5 frames per second. Flip flops were a bad choice. With each step, my feet sank further into the mud. The scene was already gripping, terrifying and beautiful, but it revealed itself a little more with each step. The mangrove trees were dead so far inland that you couldn’t even see the shoreline through the camera. Location Lake Superior is incredibly vast, and with its distinction as the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area—31,700 square miles—this inland sea lives up to its name. Superior’s coastline borders on three U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario, and its characteristics are as varied as its size. The lake’s North Shore, stretching more than 150 miles from the port city of Duluth, Minnesota, to the U.S.-Canada border and beyond, lays claim to some of the most stunning and accessible scenery in the American Midwest. When you live in the Canadian Rockies, where autumn is best measured in days not weeks, chasing fall colors can be a challenge. Driving through Canmore with an eager group of photographers last year on day one of a seven-day autumn workshop, I noticed the green poplar leaves were beginning to turn bright yellow. A week later, we made our way back to the airport, passing through Canmore once again. By then, most of the poplar leaves had already fallen. Those seven days marked the beginning, peak and conclusion to our fall colors. Not so long ago, the photographic print was how everyone experienced photography. Before websites, smartphones and apps, shoeboxes with stacks of 4x6-inch photos of the family vacation were a household staple—I still have a few in the garage myself.
