Location The Murray River originates near Mount Kosciuszko in the Snowy Mountains, then makes its way across Australia’s inland plains, forming the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria. It continues its northwest journey into South Australia before making a southerly turn, finally reaching the Southern Ocean at Goolwa. Lake Mulwala is a man-made reservoir that was created by the construction of the Yarrawonga Weir across the Murray River in 1939 to provide water for irrigation of the surrounding area. The reservoir is located between Bundalong and Yarrawonga on the Victoria side, accessed via the Murray Valley Highway, and Mulwala on the New South Wales side, accessed via Corowa Road/Spring Drive. Location, location, location. It’s the No. 1 rule of real estate, and the same principle is true for outdoor photography. As photographers, we’re always seeking out the most scenic locations, and the best spots are usually the most remote, often requiring us to travel great distances via trail to reach them. Mountain bikes are an incredible tool that we can utilize to reach those places. They’re quiet, allow you to cover greater distances in a shorter time than hiking and, according to a National Park Service research report conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, produce less erosion than hikers and horses. Taft Point Slacklining “Taft Point in Yosemite is a favorite spot for late-afternoon photography. This autumn day, I set out hoping to capture a sunset with El Capitan in the distance. When I arrived at the spot I planned to shoot from, I was surprised to find a high-line set up and someone enjoying a walk on that thin piece of webbing thousands of feet above Yosemite Valley. One of the best parts of my year is when I get the opportunity to go back to Africa to lead another photo safari. It never ceases to amaze me how many incredible photo ops there are while driving through the Serengeti or other national parks in Tanzania. Grand Teton National Park is best known for its peaks that rise quickly from the mountain floor. It’s one of the most-visited parks in the National Park System with 3.5 million visitors last year. Most visitors come during the summer months, and popular destinations within the park can be crowded at the best of times, but when a storm comes through, most people seek shelter at their campgrounds or head back to the town of Jackson for food and entertainment. Adventure sports bring together the best of outdoor recreation and landscape photography. As a subject, it’s similar to wildlife photography; to create exciting images, you need to develop your skills for following fast-moving action while maintaining strong compositions. Capturing peak moments with a sharp “actor” is critical, but so is the “stage” you create when framing the shot. The sky darkened and the lightning flashed. I set my camera on my tripod for a stable platform, attached a lightning trigger to my flash connection, engaged mirror lockup to eliminate delay and waited. The storm cell moved toward me, the air took on a greenish tinge, the sky lit up and a tremendous thunderclap exploded. My reward was a dramatic image of lightning striking Natural Bridge in Bryce Canyon. “Every April, I run back-to-back safaris to Tanzania,” explains Russ Burden. “One of my favorite locations is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area near Lake Masek. The environmental diversity attracts wildlife of all species. “This mother cheetah had four 1-month-old cubs who were frolicking and playing, the way young cats do.
