AFFORDABLE FULL-FRAME MIRRORLESS Aimed at photographers looking for a budget-friendly full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS RP is the second EOS R system model from Canon, aggressively priced at $1,299 (for the body only). Like the EOS R introduced last fall, it’s compatible with Canon RF lenses designed for the system, as well as Canon EF and EF-S lenses via optional RF EOS-R Mount Adapters. Location Hot Springs Canyon splits the border of Texas and Mexico on the eastern slopes of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. In 1909, J.O. Langford heard about hot springs with healing powers along the Rio Grande. He bought the land unseen and built a bathhouse to accommodate guests. Before Langford’s arrival, Native Americans enjoyed the clear 105-degree springs as well. From these springs, the canyon received its name. The Hot Springs Trail can be hiked as a one-way trip or as a loop. The starting point on the east side is the Daniels Ranch Picnic Area. One of the challenges of making portfolio-worthy photographs when traveling in new places is finding a balance between focusing on image making and simply being present and absorbing the experience. Speaking personally, I often feel scattered at first when I’m somewhere new with a camera in hand, and unless I just get lucky, my initial photographs reflect that. “I don’t want to remember every single place I visit with the obstruction of a camera in front of my face,” says pro travel photographer Ken Kaminesky. “When I’m photographing something special, I always try to take a moment and put my camera down to just appreciate where I am and be grateful.” Being fully present and practicing patience are among the tips Kaminesky shares in his article “Take Better Travel Photographs.”…

In the preceding articles of this three-part series, we began by exploring the “vocabulary” of composition in landscape photography and considered the key elements of composition from basic ideas like shape and line, to more abstract concepts such as the “viewer’s path” and negative space. As the day breaks on a foggy February morning, I’m in a metal boat on Rio Eiru in the western Amazon with a wildlife biologist and a local guide. We scan the treetops for the elusive Vanzolini’s saki, a black monkey about 3 feet long with an impressive fluffy tail, golden fur on its forearms and legs, and hair like a crooked toupee.
