Location Black Moshannon State Park is secluded, surrounded by the 43,000-acre state forest also named Black Moshannon. Close to I-80 and I-99 on the Pennsylvania map, the park is in the southern reach of Pennsylvania’s forested northern tier in the west central area of the Keystone State. The closest town is Philipsburg. This park is unique for its bogs and wetlands, which extend in wide areas around the 250-acre lake. The bog area is now protected by the state as a Natural Area and has increased in size to 1,992 acres with many trails as well as boardwalk overlooks. For those of us who studied photography in the days of film, black-and-white film processing and printing was the more accessible medium compared to color. The black-and-white darkroom is a more forgiving place, as you can work under safelights and better see what you’re doing, as opposed to the color darkroom, which is by necessity completely dark. In the digital age, processing images on computer screens rather than with enlargers and chemical baths, color is arguably the easier of the two, or at least the more immediate. To get to a black-and-white image with digital, you’re better off shooting in color and then converting to black and white, rather than setting your camera to monochrome capture. “When I first transitioned from film to a DSLR, I remember thinking, ‘Why does my camera need to be twice as large and heavy?’” recalls photographer Rick Hunter. “Sure, I understood that the electronics required for digital capture added to the size and weight of a DSLR, but add to that the several large, heavy lenses required for the type of work I do—it didn’t take long for me to realize the advantage of a smaller system.” Carrying 50 pounds of equipment takes its toll on your back, Hunter says. “When I switched to the Olympus OM-D system, I found I could carry what I needed without that burden. I am a self-taught photographer. I learned the art by going through countless rounds of trial and error, and by studying images from famous masters such as Robert Doisneau, Robert Capa, Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier-Bresson, and some less-famous artists such as Théodore Blanc and Antoine Demilly, two French photographers of the end of the 19th century and early 20th. I should also mention some more recent masters like Michael Kenna and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Images from these artists resonated in me in a way that color photographs couldn’t really achieve. They were timeless, for one. And to be provocative, the lack of color in them didn’t mean they were missing something—on the contrary, they appeared to me as actually having something more. After extensive research and guidance from photographer friends, I compiled a list of must-visit photographic locations around the South Island of New Zealand. As a very keen landscape photographer from western Australia, I was excited to visit some of the country’s most stunning locations, and I knew the famous Wanaka Tree would be a highlight. We traveled in August to capture the winter landscapes and beauty of the snow. I had been inspired by the many Wanaka Tree images I had constantly seen on social media. I was intrigued with how this location could offer such ever-changing images.
