Experiencing cultures and getting access to people and locations are key components of successful travel photography. From assignments that have given me the opportunity to explore 95 countries on six continents, I have developed a working methodology that helps me bridge cultural gaps and maneuver through unfamiliar territory. There are few places around the globe that arouse the senses as much as the country of Burma. It’s the kind of place where it seems almost sinful to not bring a camera when visiting. It feels as though you’ve gone back in time to a place where life was much simpler but beauty had no boundaries. The zodiac boat hurtled over the waves, each crash showering us with the cold, salty waters of the Black Sea. I could no longer see the bobbing lights of the American research vessel we’d just left. We had launched an underwater robot whose duty it was to comb the ocean floor in search of ancient Greek and Roman shipwrecks. Ahead, two more miles through the stormy waters, was our home for the project, a Ukrainian ferry that was housing part of the research team. NEW CANON DSLRS, LENS & REMOTE Though aimed at different photographers, Canon’s newest DSLRs, the EOS 77D and EOS Rebel T7i , are almost indistinguishable in terms of specifications. The biggest difference between the two is that the EOS 77D includes a top panel LCD displaying basic camera settings, while the EOS Rebel T7i omits this. Apart from that, the distinctions between the two are largely cosmetic. Canon is positioning the EOS 77D just below the 80D and is targeting users looking to step up from entry-level models. The EOS Rebel T7i is the successor to the T6i and is the first Rebel model to offer Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor-based phase detection autofocus. When you’re exploring new places and cultures, you want to be focused outward, immersing yourself in the experience—not heavily laden and distracted by your camera system. While it’s tempting to bring your complete complement of lenses and accessories with you, consider the advantages of a simpler setup with just one or two lenses that can handle most situations. These are examples of standard, tele and all-in-one zooms that cover the focal lengths you’ll use most often for travel photography. Blowball Brunch Perdita Petzl is a nature and macro photographer from Vienna, Austria, who loves searching for beautiful landscapes, insects and animals to photograph, including the rare and wild European ground squirrel. “Unfortunately, in Austria, these rodents are critically endangered to extinction because of the loss of their habitats,” Petzl explains. “Ground squirrels are always searching for food because they have to build up fat reserves before they go into hibernation. In this picture, you can see a ground squirrel reaching out for a blowball.
