One of my favorite aspects of fall color is the unpredictability of it. Sure, we know fall is going to arrive, and with fall comes the leaf change, but duration, intensity and even the very colors vary wildly from year to year and place to place. Despite countless hours of research by plant biologists and others, predicting the leaf change is still both an art and a science. This variation within the regular cycles of nature is fascinating, and it means that, as photographers, like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates, you never really know what you’re going to get.
