After the inaugural IPRF Centrefire World Championship in France in September 2022, it was full steam ahead to qualify for the biennial event in 2024 by competing in the South African Precision Rifle Federation (SAPRF) National events held in various provinces. SAPRF sent a 21-person strong team to represent Team South Africa in their respective divisions, namely Senior, Factory, Open, Limited, Ladies’ Open, and Junior. After lots of sweat, grinding and hours behind a rifle, the moment of arriving at the biggest stage in the world of shooting did not disappoint. Logistics around the travel was challenging to say the least with the airline company managing to have luggage delays travelling to Denver International Airport, Colorado to the USA, fortunately our rifles and luggage arrived albeit a day late. Limited Team You can never be 100% prepared. It takes time and hard work preparing yourself for what is to come. Every practice session and competition make you more confident about yourself, your rifle, and your accessories. Knowing your rifle eases the nerves a bit. The excitement of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new people who share your passion made the trip even more memorable. Conversations flowed around new insights, best practices, and which components work best – topics that always pique the interest. Being surrounded by the world’s best shooters shifts your mindset, pushing you to elevate your own game. Our IPRF 2024 World Championship journey officially kicked off on 6 September when we arrived at OR Tambo International airport to board our flight to Denver, Colorado via Heathrow, London. It is always a stressful process when boarding an international flight with a firearm and ammunition, not to mention travelling with sand-filled shooting bags that very closely simulate a certain substance that raises an alarm bell or two with airport security. Send IT’s 16th ELR match at Darling Steel Valley, Darling, Western Cape was on 28 September 2024. The inaugural event was held on a cold, wet and windy 6 July 2019. Overlooking Table Mountain, the range is at sea level next to the West Coast, an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The range is well known for tricky wind conditions and horseshoe topography where shooters regularly need to contend with aggressive fishtail winds. The weekend’s weather report was closely watched as a severe cold front was expected to disrupt what was supposed to be a sunny spring day in South Africa.
