On the cold winter’s weekend of 22 to 23 June, we competed in the SAPRF National Competition at Shooters’ Point at Sungiti Game Lodge in Mpumalanga. All the top shooters from around the country attended. However, what made this match even more special was the fact I would be competing behind the much anticipated Kahles K328i DLR riflescope. It was the first time anybody in the country would put the scope through its paces in match conditions, and it truly did not disappoint. The 4th World Hunting Rifle Shooting Championship from 10 to 15 June brought forth exhilarating moments of intense competition and unwavering focus for both my husband, Francois Marias Jnr. and myself. As I, Karola, stood on the firing line, the discipline required in the .222/.223 category was evident. With a maximum magnification of x14 on the riflescope and the restriction of not being able to adjust the turrets for distances or winds, the challenge lies in precisely aiming up or down for distances and left or right for wind, depending on the prevailing conditions. The one range that I still dream about are the gong steel plates that we had to shoot kneeling unsupported ranging from 80 m-180 m. And I can proudly say I achieved a full score. Securing…

The idea that you do not need to wear hearing protection when you are hunting because it is ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘interferes with my hearing game’ and ‘I only take one shot (sure)’ was debunked. The South African Hunting Rifle Shooting Association (SAHRSA) contingent returned from a thrilling and successful tour at the 4th International Hunting Rifle Shooting Association World Championships, hosted by the Namibian Hunting Rifle Shooting Association (NHRSA) at Otjiwa Safari Lodge, Otjiwarongo, Namibia from 10 to 15 June. Otjiwa Lodge hosted the 4th World Hunting Rifle Shooting Championship from 10 to 15 June. Shooters were met with challenging ranges, wind conditions that made many think twice before firing, and many new friends. The Namibian contingent represented the country across several categories with a men’s national and president’s team, .222/.223 men’s national team and president’s team, ladies’ team, and junior team. Each competitor stood their ground against shooters from South Africa, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. The .222/.223 Class rounds took place from 10 to 12 June 12, while the Open Class rounds were held from 13 to 15 June. The Open Class competition was particularly intense. When I booked to visit the Imperial War Museum in London with my grandson at the beginning of the year, inadvertently I became a member and now receive their interesting newsletters.
