Myself, Ruan Zeeman, and Mohsin Tajbhai had the privilege to be selected as the three South African Precision Rifle Shooters to represent our country at the PRS finale at Twin Peaks Rifle Club in Kansas, USA. The PRS finale is renowned one of the most challenging precision rifle matches in the world, with some of the best precision rifle shooters in the US and globally battling in a hardcore two-day (20-stage) competition. The South African team was one out of 11 international countries invited to the US. The day before the match, competitors had the opportunity to zero their rifles, check their ballistics, and train on some props. The Warrior Grind, the final PRS championship match for 2023, was really three matches in one: A club match for a maximum of 20 shooters on Day 1, followed by the combined Warrior Grind Provincial and PRS National matches over two. It was one of the most anticipated events of the season for many competitors. Hosted by the Gun Warrior team with Natasha Britnell as Match Director, many competitors stated it was “a world class shooting match and the best match of the season.” The match was held on the Wattle Shooting Range at the Danielsrust Game Farm in the Rant en Dal area of Krugersdorp, Gauteng. The US Precision Rifle Series (PRS) culminated in the PRS Finale held in the town of Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Despite sounding like a spa retreat, it most assuredly was not. Neither was this prairie town a thriving metropolis, with a population of only 1 700. However, it has some of the most generous inhabitants I have met in the US. The town has a true Americana feel about it, given the red brick main street, small local shops, and a rich history of cattle ranching, oil, and indigenous cultures. Given that it was the first weekend in November, shooters were lucky that the weather was sunny with a 20°C high and crisp mornings. Leading up to this match, I was faced with many frustrations and failures over the past few months in my shooting career, ranging from equipment failure to the mental side of the sport. I knew I had to overcome these challenges, but I also knew I could not do it alone. Being a devout Christian, I had put all my trust in the Lord, trusting the process.
