This year was my first entry into the King of 1 Mile SA (KO1M SA) and King of 2 Miles South Africa (KO2M SA). On 2 September, we hosted the seventh .22 LR ELR (Extreme Long Range) Send IT match at PEKS Shooting Range near Wellington in the Western Cape, with a full house of 38 adults and nine juniors competing. We welcomed new shooters to the world of rimfire ELR and are pleased to have had shooters travel hundreds of kilometres to attend this family-orientated event. Rimfire ELR has gained tremendous interest from the sports-shooting community because it is exciting, challenging and accessible to a broad range of shooters. I dabbled in some PRS type matches for a while around 2010, starting with a .308, then a 6.5 Creedmoor. That was fun, but I always desired to shoot really far and see what was even possible. I was not that excited about shooting off moving platforms and wobbly fence posts, etc. I just preferred prone and stable, so I gravitated to ELR. That led me to build a .338 Lapua in 2013 and start shooting farther and farther. However, I had not yet shot a competition with a big gun. Let us begin with the history of RDS and shed some light on their evolution and how they function. A little-known fact is that the original RDS were prismatic and came about in World War II. The Nydar Model 47 prismatic sight used a prism to flip and focus the image seen down the scope. The reticle was etched onto the glass and could also be illuminated, so they were referred to as red dot sights. Short-range world championships have also been around for much longer than long-range, with the 29th MLAIC Short-Range World Championship hosted by Germany in 2022. The 13th MLAIC Long-Range World Championship was held in Hungary recently. Long-range black powder shooting is not for the fainthearted, but those who are hooked will not trade it for anything in the world. Preparations for the world championships take years. The Black Powder Shooting Union of South Africa (BPSU) has to comply with several requirements before the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) will consider and award Protea colours.
