Another busy month has passed, which saw numerous sports-shooting competitions, gong shoots and matches take place all over South Africa, as well as in neighbouring Namibia. Of course, covering every single event is an impossible task, despite On Target Africa receiving many invitations to do so from shooting associations far and wide. The shooting calendar is indeed chock-a-block! For example, KwaZulu-Natal held the first leg of its popular Natal Gong Series long-range gong shoot from 10 to 12 March, nestled in the rolling hills of the Drakensberg near Melmoth. The province’s next long-range shoot is from 17 to 19 November in Nottingham Road, known as the Midlands Gong Shoot hosted by Nico Harris. FIRST W CAPE PROVINCIAL PR22 LR MATCH

With the matches now formalised, our dedicated bunch of shooters in the Western Cape also modified and upgraded our traditional .22 shoot to bring it into line with provincial-level guidelines. We launched the renewed format at our first provincial shoot on 20 March. Despite many shooters taking a holiday over the long weekend, and the fact that two other major shooting organisations hosted events on the same day, we had 21 shooters eagerly turn out ready to ring some steel. The course of fire consisted of eight stages, each stage with ten shots and 120 second par times on all stages. What was really encouraging was the fact that we had many new shooters who had heard about the fun-filled .22 shoots and decided to try their hand at it.…

First IPSC SA Rifle National Championship of 2022

It was exciting to participate again in a match hosted by the Limpopo Province Practical Shooting Association (LPPSA) at Polokwane Shooting Range managed by Pietersburg Shooting Centre. Our range is one of the best practical shooting ranges in South Africa, situated on the southern outskirts of the Limpopo capital. I like to refer to the province as the hunting and sports-shooting capital of the country. LPPSA will host no less than three national events (Level 3) this year, of which the recent event was the second one. An investment in precision

In terms of sports-shooting, I deal with a huge variety of activities ranging from 10 m, and lately pushing the envelope in terms of extreme range. Optics are now the norm. Serious sports-shooters dedicate a lot of training time to prepare themselves to perform at a provincial, national and international level. Part of this is selecting the optimal equipment for top performance at these demanding levels. Serious money is spent on choosing the correct calibre ammunition and optics. A family affair

Most of my friends are surprised when they hear that we are going to spend the day on a farm, shooting at targets in the heat of March summer, and even dragging our children along.
