King of the Weir
In its heyday, Hume Weir was an immensely popular circuit that, despite being crammed into a very small parcel of land, always produced close, exciting racing. For eleven years from 1970 to 1980 inclusive, the big annual meeting was the King of the Weir, invariably held in stifling summer heat.
Gary’s shot is from the KoW on January 30th, 1972, and shows a grid bristling with stars. The push start for the 25-lap race displays a variety of methods; some pushing from the left, some from the right, with others paddle starting from the seat.
