Call it inter-city rivalry, but as soon as Melbourne’s Motordrome (see OBA 4) opened on 29th November, 1924, Sydney just had to have a high speed oval of its own. In reality, plans for the Sydney ‘saucer’ had been around for some years, but like the Melbourne project, had suffered a few false starts along the way. The Motordrome concept had been mooted as far back as 1915, pushed by the self-styled ‘King of Sport’, John Wren, a boxing and turf promoter, gold mine owner, and political activist, who made his initial fortune with his own ‘tote’ based at Collingwood.
